{"id":50723,"date":"2022-06-20T04:00:07","date_gmt":"2022-06-19T18:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=50723"},"modified":"2022-06-15T14:25:10","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T04:25:10","slug":"art-commission-opens-for-new-chilwell-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/art-commission-opens-for-new-chilwell-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Art commission opens for new Chilwell Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UP-AND-COMING artists and creative teams will have the chance to have their work on display at the redeveloped Chilwell Library.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Greater Geelong is accepting submissions for a Chilwell Library Public Art Commission that will complement the unique qualities of the Newtown-based site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublic art plays a key role in contributing to public spaces, reflecting local stories and being an expression of community pride,\u201d Brownbill Ward councillor Peter Murrihy said. \u201cOur aim is for this public art commission to contribute to the successful redevelopment of the Chilwell Library by bringing Geelong\u2019s unique arts, culture and heritage into the lives of library users and passers-by.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city also released a set of criteria that submissions should cater to, with added emphasis on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to submit proposals to the $25,000 commission.<\/p>\n<p>Submission hints include referencing the Barwon River\u2019s traditional name \u201cParwon\u201d, the Wadawurrung word for magpie, as well as Newtown and Chilwell\u2019s rich industrial and residential history in industries such as tanneries, wool scours, and soap works.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 724px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/06\/ChilwellLibraryre_28709.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"724\" height=\"413\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New renders released by the city of the library&#8217;s new facade on 51 Russell Street. GRAPHIC: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Submissions may be for stand-alone 3D works, works integrated within the new library, designs and materials or a combination of both.<\/p>\n<p>Member of the Chilwell Library Group, Lynne Dowling, said the group is excited to see the timeline on the redevelopment moving forward after starting the campaign to save the library back in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very pleased to see the development moving forward,\u201d Ms Dowling said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn all honesty, we\u2019re just pleased to see the library still there, because clearly, it\u2019s important as the only free community space\/hub in the Newtown and Chilwell area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to all aspects of the library\u2019s design coming to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Expressions of interest close Monday, June 27, with the successful commission applicant to be announced on Friday, September 2.<\/p>\n<p>Shortlisted artists will be selected and notified on July 15 with individual site visits to be conducted in the month to follow.<\/p>\n<p>Submissions can be made at publicart@geelongcity.vic.gov.au.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UP-AND-COMING artists and creative teams will have the chance to have their work on display at the redeveloped Chilwell Library.
