{"id":51744,"date":"2022-07-04T04:00:38","date_gmt":"2022-07-03T18:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=51744"},"modified":"2022-06-29T15:54:39","modified_gmt":"2022-06-29T05:54:39","slug":"beckley-market-avoids-closure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/beckley-market-avoids-closure\/","title":{"rendered":"Beckley Market avoids closure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LAND managers of Corio\u2019s Beckley Park have negotiated a <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/last-minute-effort-to-save-beckley-park-market\/\">last-minute<\/a> reprieve for the site\u2019s market that was due for closure this weekend, taking control of the 50-year-old institution from the Geelong Greyhound Racing Club (GGRC).<\/p>\n<p>Three years through a 10-year contract to run the market, GGRC general manager Ray Bartolo cited high fixed costs associated with running the event as a key reason behind the club\u2019s decision to pull out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the COVID pandemic and shutdowns the club has been losing money by running the market,\u201d he said last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese losses have been significant, and our club is determined to focus on animal welfare as a priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beckley Park Committee of Management (BPCoM) secretary manager Bob Barry said the club had been given \u201cconsiderable\u201d rent relief over several years, and the GGRC\u2019s decision to pull out of the contract effectively broke their licence and the matter had been referred to lawyers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51747\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51747\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51747\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-29T154307.637.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-29T154307.637.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-29T154307.637-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At least three propsective managers for the market are being considered.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe will be looking at that from what our legal rights are,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Barry also criticised the club for giving less than a month\u2019s notice on its decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople rely on this market, it\u2019s not just a hobby, it\u2019s an income, source of food and produce\u2026 particularly for those in the north of Geelong,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The committee\u2019s decision to takeover running of the market is on an interim basis, it will manage operations until a new manager can be found and it is already in the process of considering three expressions of interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn effect the BPCoM have rescued the market to support the community and the stallholders,\u201d Mr Barry said.<\/p>\n<p>Up to 150 stallholders operate from site selling produce, gourmet food, flowers, homewares, plants and clothing each Saturday, many had expressed concern on social media about their future after receiving notice from the GGRC of its decision.<\/p>\n<p>BPCoM took control of the event after Saturday, July 2.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LAND managers of Corio\u2019s Beckley Park have negotiated a last-minute reprieve for the site\u2019s market that was due for closure this weekend, taking control of the 50-year-old institution from the Geelong Greyhound Racing Club (GGRC).
