Wadawurrung Dja: Awakening Country is a celebration of new life as each season brings about subtle changes of birds nesting in the cool season, flowers blooming with life and the deep cultural knowledge embedded within the trees.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73345\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73345\" style=\"width: 673px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73345 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/DeanneGilson2022_95561.jpg?_t=1656983390\" alt=\"\" width=\"673\" height=\"1300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73345\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Wurrak Tree&#8221;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>National Wool Museum Director Padraic Fisher said the exhibition forms part of City\u2019s commitment to build strong relationships and partnerships with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and the wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe museum commissioned Dr Gilson to create six original paintings and 10 contemporary ceremonial cloaks exclusively for this exhibition,\u201d Mr Fisher said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Gilson represents the colours of Wadawurrung country in her art practice, particularly white ochre she collects while walking on Country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe colours of Country are highly personal and reclaim my culture that was missing from my early life. Each colour links to the act of ceremony, in particular the use of white ochre,\u201d Dr Gilson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing elements of Country within my art practice is really positive because you\u2019re walking on country, you\u2019re gathering, you\u2019re sourcing your materials and you\u2019re connecting to them as you\u2019re sourcing them. It\u2019s a deeper level of art for me because I\u2019m on my traditional country \u2013 my ancestral lands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 10 ceremonial cloaks in the exhibition represent the spirits of ancestral matriarchs and the importance of ceremony to Wadawurrung Traditional Owners.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73347\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73347\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73347 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/DeanneGilsonBogongM_61488.jpg?_t=1656983414\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"542\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Bogong Moth Ceremony at You Yangs&#8221;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>City of Greater Geelong creative communities and culture portfolio chair Cr Trent Sullivan said the city was committed to telling the stories of Greater Geelong, including our region\u2019s 60,000-year history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to thank Dr Gilson for creating 16 works specifically for this exhibition.
