THE City of Greater Geelong has chosen a trio of contractors from across the G21 region to move bulk household and green organics throughout the municipality until July 2025.<\/p>\n
Newcomb Sand and Soil (which has operations in both Torquay and Moolap), Green Care Mulching (in Moolap) and Wettenhalls (based in Geelong and Colac) have won the contract and have committed to purchasing local resources and materials, and to sub-contract from within the region as needed.<\/p>\n
The city’s Procurement Policy, which was adopted in December last year, includes weighting to encourage the use of local suppliers.<\/p>\n
Under the contract, the three businesses will take rubbish and garden organics from waste collection vehicles and load them into bulk haulage vehicles.<\/p>\n
This will allow them to move the materials across greater distances, including to the city’s Garden Organics Processing Facility in Anakie.<\/p>\n
The deal is for an initial term of three years, with two 12-month options to extend.<\/p>\n
The panel contract is estimated to cost $640,000 per year excluding GST over the full five years.<\/p>\n
Geelong mayor Peter Murrihy said it was great to be able to invest $640,000 directly into the G21 region’s economy.<\/p>\n
“It’s really pleasing to see the panel of contractors are committed to providing jobs to our community members and sourcing local product where possible.”<\/p>\n
“This will have a positive impact on our economy.”<\/p>\n
Cr Belinda Moloney, chair of the council’s circular economy portfolio, said there were so many reliable businesses in the G21 region.<\/p>\n
“It’s important that where we can, we channel investment back into the local community, and this tender appointment is a good example of that.<\/p>\n
