{"id":53430,"date":"2022-07-16T04:15:11","date_gmt":"2022-07-15T18:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=53430"},"modified":"2022-07-14T16:42:36","modified_gmt":"2022-07-14T06:42:36","slug":"choose-your-cause-and-run-with-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/choose-your-cause-and-run-with-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Choose your cause and run with it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Run Melbourne is a charity run with a twist.<\/p>\n<p>Each winter for almost two decades participants gather in Melbourne to run 5.5km, 10km or 21km, but unlike most charity runs, Run Melbourne lets participants choose their own charity.<\/p>\n<p>This year numerous brave participants from Geelong and the Surf Coast are tackling the winter air, waking up to train in the dark while mornings are foggy and still so cold you can see your own breath, and running for causes that are close<br \/>\nto home.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps braver than anyone running this year is Surf Coast local Tess McMurtrie.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2020, Tess was diagnosed with Metastatic psteosarcoma, and after enduring months of chemotherapy and an above knee amputation she was left unable to walk more than 1km.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73934\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73934\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73934 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/All-images-14-600x320.png?_t=1657780082\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"320\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73934\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tess and her mother Sue McMurtrie are bravely tackling the 5.5km Run Melbourne charity event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But, this year, with much training and community support, Tess and her mother Sue McMurtrie are bravely tackling the 5.5km to raise funds for Australia and New Zealand Sarcoma Association (ANZSA).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re hoping with training and the support of our friends and family that we will together be able to complete the 5km Run Melbourne,\u201d Sue said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73936\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73936\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73936 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/All-images-13-600x320.png?_t=1657780136\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"320\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73936\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Above, teacher at Iona College Geelong Anna Haintz teaches at a school in Timor Leste.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be such an achievement for Tess and to raise funds for ANZSA,\u201d Sue said.<\/p>\n<p>Another group of Geelong residents are running to raise funds for Geelong Viqueque Friendship Schools, a partnership between schools in Timor-Leste and Geelong which funds school resources, training and education.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73935\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73935\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73935 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/All-images-15-600x320.png?_t=1657780089\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"320\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73935\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This year teacher at Iona College Geelong Anna Haintz helped arrange a running team to raise funds for Geelong Viqueque Friendship Schools. The cause is personal to Anna, having herself spent time in Timor Leste.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Iona College Geelong teacher Anna Haintz helped arrange the running team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is close to my heart as I\u2019ve spent time volunteering and re-visiting friends made in Timor Leste,\u201d Anna said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIona College Geelong is also in the process of organising a relationship with a sister school in Timor Leste to foster and grow a connection there,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The run will take place on Sunday, July 24 weaving through Melbourne city landmarks and finishing on the Grand Slam Oval.<\/p>\n<p>CEO of Sole Motive, the group organising the run, Lisa Holmes, said Run Melbourne has helped raise more than $18 million for more than 400 charities over the past 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis couldn\u2019t have happened without the help of our participants who have some of the most inspiring and encouraging stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To donate to Tess and Sue\u2019s run, head to bit.ly\/3ImTBto, or support Geelong Viqueque Friendship Schools at bit.ly\/3bXeUFU .<\/p>\n<p>Registrations for Run Melbourne will stay open until July 24.
