{"id":54901,"date":"2022-07-29T04:15:51","date_gmt":"2022-07-28T18:15:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=54901"},"modified":"2022-07-27T12:04:57","modified_gmt":"2022-07-27T02:04:57","slug":"local-say-for-events-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/local-say-for-events-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Local say for events centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG residents can have their say on the Geelong Convention and Exhibition Centre&#8217;s (GCEC) objectives as preparations continue for the project&#8217;s construction contracts.<\/p>\n<p>The state government has opened consultation for the role the new centre will play in Geelong&#8217;s community to inform tender documents it will issue to builders and developers later this year.<\/p>\n<p>An Engage Victoria survey asks locals to rank their preferred objectives for GCEC so the state government can form its request for proposal documents to the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>The project&#8217;s listed objectives are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Position the GCEC as Victoria&#8217;s premium regional convention, exhibition and events destination<\/li>\n<li>Revitalise central Geelong<\/li>\n<li>Drive the visitor and knowledge economies of the region<\/li>\n<li>Enhance Geelong&#8217;s position as a City of Design, and<\/li>\n<li>Create and capture value.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The survey also asks what type of events locals would like to see at the new centre and what the city could gain by having such a facility.<\/p>\n<p>Engage Victoria hosted an online session last week and have scheduled an in-person event on Wednesday next week. Feedback closes on August 31.<\/p>\n<p>The $294-million centre is the blue-ribbon project of the Geelong City Deal.
