{"id":55522,"date":"2022-08-24T04:00:40","date_gmt":"2022-08-23T18:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=55522"},"modified":"2022-08-17T17:06:22","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T07:06:22","slug":"geelong-west-book-fair-reaches-record-numbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/geelong-west-book-fair-reaches-record-numbers\/","title":{"rendered":"Geelong West Book Fair reaches record numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Rotary Club of Geelong West believes its latest Rotary Book Fair at Geelong West Town Hall is the biggest and best book fair they have ever hosted.<\/p>\n<p>Rotary Club of Geelong West president Jim Marendaz said more than 2,500 people attended the three-day book fair with more than 30,000 books on offer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re obviously pretty happy with that result,&#8221; Mr Marendaz said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 364px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/08\/GeelongWestBookF_41312.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"455\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More than 2,500 people checked in to browse books.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;In normal times, we have this event twice a year, but in covid times, like everything else, we were lucky to get one fair in during 2021, so we&#8217;ve had a bit of a build-up of the stock of our books.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On the back of a pretty successful fair back in February, we thought we might have a smaller event this time around, but in fact we had record sales.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In total, the rotary club estimates it has raised $28,000 in total from the fair, but that number is still climbing as final tallies continue.<\/p>\n<p>All entrants were required to pay a gold coin donation upon arrival with paperback and hardcover books setting back buyers one dollar and two dollars, respectively.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 497px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/08\/GeelongWestBookF_70561.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"497\" height=\"497\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Perusers filling out Geelong West Town Hall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr Marendaz said the large number of sales could be because new demographics are attending the book fair.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re seeing a more localised clientele, more people around the Geelong West area,&#8221; Mr Marendaz said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve previously seen older aged demographics coming through the door looking for a bargain on a book, but now it&#8217;s very different.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mum and dads with their school kids come through a lot on the Friday afternoon timeslot of our fair, particularly after school, a lot more younger people have been coming to the event than before and it&#8217;s really just a really big cross-section of people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A large portion of the funds raised will go towards the Barwon Health Foundation&#8217;s Project North initiative to support healthier futures for residents in the northern suburbs of Geelong, in addition to other local community initiatives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY VINNIE VAN OORSCHOTTHE Rotary Club of Geelon [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"btn btn-secondary understrap-read-more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/geelong-west-book-fair-reaches-record-numbers\/\">Read More&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":191,"featured_media":55528,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[],"post_folder":[],"class_list":["post-55522","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
