WILDLIFE sanctuary Jirrahlinga has started its new life in central Victoria after shutting its doors at Barwon Heads earlier this year.<\/p>\n
The conservation centre has merged with a dingo refuge at Chewton, between Bendigo and Ballarat, to create the Jirrahlinga Dingo Conservation and Wildlife Education Centre.<\/p>\n
Native animals such as koalas plus other mammals, marsupials, reptiles and birds have relocated to their new home after the Barwon Heads site closed suddenly in May.<\/p>\n
The new wildlife centre began accepting visitors by appointment only last month.<\/p>\n
Jirrahlinga director Tehree Gordon said family concerns were behind the move to the existing Chewton centre.<\/p>\n
“I wish to inform all our loyal visitors past and present that due to the critical health of a family member we have made the decision to consolidate our venues,” a statement read.<\/p>\n
“Jirrahlinga will continue to perform all rehabilitation and rescue services as we have done since 1975 the only difference is that we will be based in one location.<\/p>\n
“Rest assured all funds raised previously have and will continue to go towards our animals’ welfare and care.”<\/p>\n
Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary had become a popular tourist attraction and community institution for its nearly 50-year stay at Taits Road, Barwon Heads.<\/p>\n
In June last year the sanctuary issued a plea for community donations as COVID impacts caused a dramatic drop in visitation and led Jirrahlinga to be “in crisis”.<\/p>\n
Community members and groups rallied to raise $92,000 for the popular center to allow it to reopen, while the state government chipped in with $50,000.<\/p>\n
Jirrahlinga had revealed plans for an expansion back in 2018 when its land was listed for sale.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
