ROAD users in and near Port Phillip Bay this Sunday, October 9 are asked to take care on the roads as thousands of bike riders take on Australia’s biggest bike ride, the United Energy Around the Bay.<\/p>\n

More than 10,000 bike riders have registered for the event (formerly known as Around the Bay in a Day) in one of the six ride options: 20km, 50km, 100km, 200km, Classic 210km and 300km.<\/p>\n

Locally, the Classic 210km and 300km routes will pass through via Little River, Geelong and Queenscliff in that order before riders catch a ferry to Sorrento to complete their ride.<\/p>\n

Bicycle Network, Victoria Police, VicRoads and local councils are asking local road users to be aware of the increase in bike traffic, changed traffic conditions and extended travel times.<\/p>\n

Local road users to seek an alternate route where possible.<\/p>\n

All rides start and finish at Albert Park Lake where an event village will provide a range of entertainment to help celebrate everyone’s achievement.<\/p>\n

Riders will be on the road after leaving Albert Park Lake from between 5am-7pm.<\/p>\n

At times there will be speed reductions, the presence of traffic controllers and police.<\/p>\n

All traffic treatments, including road closures have taken into consideration the safety of all road users.<\/p>\n

Bicycle Network general manager of events, said road users would notice the extra bike riders in their local areas and asked them to be mindful when using the roads.<\/p>\n

“Bicycle Network is working with local authorities including councils, VicRoads and Victoria Police to implement a number of changes to traffic conditions to minimise the risks for all road users.<\/p>\n

“With more than 10,000 bike riders, including many children on the 20km, 50km and 100km ride options, we do ask other road users to plan ahead and allow extra time if they need to travel on the route.<\/p>\n

“We’d like to thank locals and visitors for their cooperation and patience during the event.”<\/p>\n

It has been three years since the last United Energy Around the Bay ride.<\/p>\n

“Some of the participants will be very experienced bike riders while others will be saddling up for their first Around the Bay,” Ms Borchers said.<\/p>\n
