NORTH Geelong’s Focal Point Gallery has resurrected its Women in Photography group, two years after it was forced to close due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n
The group hosted its first monthly meeting last month, which featured guest speaker Karen Dodd, a celebrated photojournalist who has worked in Australia and overseas for more than 30 years.<\/p>\n
“It was a great opportunity to hear about the role of the photojournalist from someone who has been through the tumultuous changes from black-and-white to colour and from film to digital,” gallery owner Craig Watson said.<\/p>\n
“The group got together in late 2019 to foster support and encouragement for women and non-binary photographers, who sometimes feel intimidated or left out in a predominantly male cohort.<\/p>\n
“Unfortunately, after only a couple of meetings, the group was put on hold throughout the COVID pandemic\u2026the meeting was the first one since then and the aim is to rekindle the group with guest speakers and evenings where women photographers can exchange ideas and view each other’s work in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.”<\/p>\n
Group activities taking place during coming months include darkroom demonstrations; making and using a pinhole camera; studio demonstrations and more guest speakers.<\/p>\n
The gallery is now showing Masters of Australian Photojournalism.<\/p>\n
The show includes award-winning photos and Press Photographers of the Year, and a series of images from famous British-Australian press photographer Tim Page who passed away last month.<\/p>\n
