{"id":60423,"date":"2022-10-21T04:00:43","date_gmt":"2022-10-20T17:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=60423"},"modified":"2022-10-18T14:00:02","modified_gmt":"2022-10-18T03:00:02","slug":"surf-life-launches-in-torquay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/surf-life-launches-in-torquay\/","title":{"rendered":"Surf Life launches in Torquay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 100 people celebrated all &#8216;Women Who Live to Surf and Create&#8217; by attending the official launch of new book &#8216;Surf Life&#8217; at Patagonia in Torquay on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>Surf Life is the newest creative venture of Anglesea author Gill Hutchison and photographer Willem Dirk du-Toit, and details the stories of 25 women from around the country who share their experiences and creative processes that bring them to the sea.<\/p>\n<p>Friday evening&#8217;s free event was a chance for locals to learn a bit more about Hutchison and du Toit&#8217;s venture across Australia and the decade of work that went into creating the 200+ page book.<\/p>\n<p>The author said she was thrilled with the outcome of the book, and while alluding to it coming with many challenges, it was one that she and Willem thoroughly enjoyed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82540\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82540\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-82540 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/IMG_9391_43450-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1665979132\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82540\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hutchison and photographer Willem Dirk du-Toit spoke about the creative ideas behind the book which took them all across the country.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I always imagined that words would flow out of me like music flows out of Stevie Wonder, but that certainly wasn&#8217;t the case, I battled huge imposter syndrome the whole time, but it was a book that I needed to do,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I loved working with Willem, we made a great team, we didn&#8217;t have one single disagreement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had to face some challenges and fears of my own to go and interview these amazing women and they were connections that have just blown my mind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82539\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82539\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-82539 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/IMG_9396_43538-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1665979128\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Over 100 people turned out to catch the launch of the new book.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whilst having the chance to hear from Hutchison and photographer Willem Dirk du-Toit, the audience also visually feasted on the works local artists Anna Skermer, Jessi Muir and Kerry Lomas who were three of the ten locals featured in the book.<\/p>\n<p>According to Hutchison, &#8216;the book is a labour of love, it&#8217;s a lot of heart and soul&#8217; and she hopes that readers can resonate with the thrill of travel and meeting like-minded people who all share a love for the ocean.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82538\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82538\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-82538 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/surflfie_43513-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1665979123\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Copies of Surf Life were flying out the door on Friday evening.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To get a copy of the book, head into Torquay Books or your local bookstore.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/babes_on_waves\/\">instagram.com\/babes_on_waves\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 100 people celebrated all &#8216;Women Who Live to Surf and Create&#8217; by attending the official launch of new book &#8216;Surf Life&#8217; at Patagonia in Torquay on Friday night.
