{"id":63067,"date":"2022-12-16T11:46:31","date_gmt":"2022-12-16T00:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=63067"},"modified":"2022-12-16T11:46:31","modified_gmt":"2022-12-16T00:46:31","slug":"committee-for-geelong-announces-new-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/committee-for-geelong-announces-new-chief\/","title":{"rendered":"Committee for Geelong announces new chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG-bred sports administrator and Geelong Cats committee member Michael Johnston will be the new CEO of the Committee for Geelong (CfG).<\/p>\n<p>Mr Johnston grew up in Geelong and is also an independent member of the Geelong Football Club\u2019s Corporate Governance Committee.<\/p>\n<p>He will take the reins of CfG on February 13 next year to take over from outgoing boss Jennifer Cromaarty.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Johnston will make the jump from his current role as Chief Strategy Officer and General Counsel for Hockey Australia.<\/p>\n<p>He previously worked with the Australian Sports Commission, on the board of software platform Tidy HQ and is a certified practicing lawyer after training with Coulter Legal.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Johnston said he was \u201chumbled and incredibly excited\u201d for the new opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy ambition is to help Geelong sustainably develop and build the infrastructure to support population increases while maintaining its community feel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith a vibrant and diversified economy, and compelling work-life balance, I see Geelong as the most loveable city in Australia. Geelong is my home and I cannot wait to play an active role in positively shaping its future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CfG chair Clive Pugh said he was confident Mr Johnston would be the ideal fit for the advocacy body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael impressed us with his understanding of the issues facing Geelong and how we will be able to advocate for Geelong\u2019s best future,\u201d Mr Pugh said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving grown up in Geelong, Michael has a natural love for Geelong, but he has also spent time away from Geelong and it is that experience that brings fresh eyes and thinking for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Committee for Geelong has a clear strategic vision to advocate for economic and social prosperity for the people of Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the ongoing development of Geelong pushing population growth and the pending Commonwealth Games, there are significant opportunities to work with all levels of government to advocate for Geelong as world-class city that is vital, inclusive, progressive, smart, and sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Pugh also paid homage to departing CEO Jennifer Cromarty, <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/cromarty-commitee-for-geelong\/\">who in September announced she would leave the role this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJennifer has been a passionate advocate for Geelong and has influenced the debate on key projects for Geelong,\u201d Mr Pugh said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJennifer has been relentless in driving the leaders for Geelong program and supporting the State community leadership board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wish Jennifer well for her future endeavours.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG-bred sports administrator and Geelong Cats committee member Michael Johnston will be the new CEO of the Committee for Geelong (CfG).
