GEELONG-based Senator Sarah Henderson has a new job in the Shadow Ministry, taking over the education portfolio from the retiring Alan Tudge.<\/p>\n
Formerly Shadow Communications Minister, Senator Henderson’s new title keeps her within the Shadow Cabinet and as one of the Coalition’s most senior political figures.<\/p>\n
Mr Tudge resigned as shadow education minister on Thursday last week, and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton announced the reshuffle three days later.<\/p>\n
In a statement on Sunday, Senator Henderson said she was honoured by her appointment.<\/p>\n
“I look forward to building on the Coalition’s strong legacy in the education portfolio such as vital reforms to lift school standards, improve teacher education, deliver a better childcare system, and establish a new research commercialisation agenda for Australian universities.<\/p>\n
“I pay tribute to Alan Tudge for his achievements as minister for education and the Member for Aston, and will be continuing his very important work including supporting Indigenous-focused initiatives in remote schools and an improved national curriculum which promotes a more positive, optimistic view of our nation.”<\/p>\n
Senator Henderson said she had experienced “the full breadth” of Australia’s education system in her time as a student and a parent, including Sacred Heart College from kindergarten to Year 7, completing secondary school at Geelong College, studying law at University of Technology Sydney and finishing her degree at Monash University in Melbourne.<\/p>\n
“As a regional Victorian, I am passionate about equitable access to education and its critical importance in advancing our nation.<\/p>\n
“Australia’s future and prosperity depends on a first-class early childhood, primary, secondary and tertiary education system which gives young Australians the best chance to learn, thrive and help contribute to society and our place in the world.”<\/p>\n
Senator Henderson’s former communications portfolio will be taken over by former minister David Coleman in his return to the frontbench.<\/p>\n
“These new appointments will strengthen the Coalition’s representation in critical portfolio areas,” Mr Dutton said.<\/p>\n
