{"id":66081,"date":"2023-02-26T13:58:41","date_gmt":"2023-02-26T02:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=66081"},"modified":"2023-02-26T13:58:41","modified_gmt":"2023-02-26T02:58:41","slug":"landmarks-light-up-for-state-tribute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/landmarks-light-up-for-state-tribute\/","title":{"rendered":"Landmarks light up for state tribute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG\u2019S City Hall will turn pink this evening in a tribute to an Australian cultural icon.<\/p>\n<p>Dame Olivia Newton-John is being farewelled at a state funeral this afternoon in Melbourne, with the historic Geelong building to be projected with pink light in a tribute to the British-Australian singer, actress and activist.<\/p>\n<p>The colour pink is used to raise awareness of breast and gynaecological cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Newton-John died in August last year following a three-decade battle with breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Following her distinguished performing career, Newton-John earned acclaim and humanitarian awards for her work supporting research and treatment for sufferers of women\u2019s cancers, and was a passionate advocate for the environment and animal rights.<\/p>\n<p>Projection artist Matt Bonner will turn City Hall\u2019s Gheringhap Street facade pink, displaying Dame Newton-John\u2019s name and dates of birth and death.<\/p>\n<p>Other landmarks including catenary lights at the intersection of Malop and Moorabool Streets, Little Malop Central festoons, Central Geelong and Waterfront smart pole beacon lights and Waterfront palm tree lights will also turn pink.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66082\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66082\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-66082 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/02\/Newton-John-web-embedded-600x380.png?_t=1677380198\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/02\/Newton-John-web-embedded-600x380.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/02\/Newton-John-web-embedded-300x190.png 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/02\/Newton-John-web-embedded-1024x649.png 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/02\/Newton-John-web-embedded-768x486.png 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/02\/Newton-John-web-embedded.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66082\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geelong City Hall will turn pink tonight in memory of Dame Olivia Newton-John.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>City of Greater Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said tonight\u2019s event would honour her long list of achievements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Greater Geelong community has been touched by Olivia\u2019s talent and warmth through her musical and acting pursuits,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer compassion and drive to help those with cancer through both the Olivia Newton-John Foundation and Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre deeply resonated with our residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOlivia was an icon and inspiration, and we are proud to call her Australian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The State Memorial service is today at Hamer Hall, Melbourne from 4pm, with Channel 7, Channel 9 and the ABC all broadcasting the service.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong\u2019s City Hall tribute begins from 8.30pm.<\/p>\n<p>Dame Newton-John\u2019s family has requested that memorial tributes be made in the form of donations to the Wellness Programs at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre: <strong>onjcancercentre.org\/donate<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG\u2019S City Hall will turn pink this evening in a tribute to an Australian cultural icon.
