{"id":66963,"date":"2023-03-25T04:00:51","date_gmt":"2023-03-24T17:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=66963"},"modified":"2023-03-23T08:58:10","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T21:58:10","slug":"array-of-athletes-to-take-on-ironman-70-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/array-of-athletes-to-take-on-ironman-70-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Array of athletes to take on IRONMAN 70.3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SEASONED veterans, up and coming stars, and first timers will all hit the start line at this year&#8217;s IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong on Sunday, March 26.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,300 athletes will contest a 1.9km swim, 90km ride and 21.1km run in and around Geelong, before finishing on the waterfront&#8217;s Steampacket Gardens.<\/p>\n<p>IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong remains a popular event for athletes new to the circuit, with more than a third of entrants competing in their first ever IRONMAN 70.3 race this weekend.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/03\/061A7840-2_74449.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"309\" height=\"463\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sam Appleton was crowned the men&#8217;s winner of last year&#8217;s event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Geoff Meyer, managing director of Oceania for The IRONMAN Group, said organisers were looking forward to welcoming athletes back to Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong is a favourite amongst our athletes and it&#8217;s great that we&#8217;ll be welcoming them back to the region on March 26, and we can&#8217;t wait to see more than 1,300 athletes cross the finish line and achieve their goals on race day,&#8221; Mr Meyer said.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s leading professional triathletes will also take on the elements, with the event providing an ideal opportunity for them to race head-to-head on home soil.<\/p>\n<p>Included in the women&#8217;s professional field is defending women&#8217;s champion Lotte Wilms, 2022 podium finisher Grace Thek, and 2019 champion Radka Kahlefeldt.<\/p>\n<p>2021 champion Steve McKenna line up will once again join his fellow athletes on the start line, racing alongside IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania podium finisher Caleb Noble, 2021 IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast champion Nicholas Free and 2022 Nutri-Grain IRONMAN New Zealand winner Mike Phillips.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/03\/2H3A6966A_19282.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Defending women&#8217;s champion Lotte Wilms is confirmed to participate in the women&#8217;s field this weekend.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;The event will also provide a great opportunity for our leading Australian professional triathletes to race on home soil and I&#8217;m sure the competition will be fierce,&#8221; Mr Meyer added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re all looking forward to seeing them in action.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For more on IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong visit www.ironman.com\/im703-geelong<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SEASONED veterans, up and coming stars, and first timers will all hit the start line at this year&#8217;s IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong on Sunday, March 26.
