{"id":68412,"date":"2023-04-06T04:32:37","date_gmt":"2023-04-05T18:32:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=68412"},"modified":"2023-04-05T20:41:28","modified_gmt":"2023-04-05T10:41:28","slug":"rod-stewart-wears-it-well-in-geelong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/rod-stewart-wears-it-well-in-geelong\/","title":{"rendered":"Rod Stewart wears it well in Geelong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SIR Rod Stewart finally sailed into Geelong at the fourth attempt, turning back the clock and wowing fans with a set full of hits at Mt Duneed Estate.<\/p>\n<p>Originally scheduled for October 2020, the A Day on the Green gig was postponed to March 2022, rescheduled to March 18 this year but cancelled on the day of the performance due to Stewart contracting a viral infection, then rescheduled again to Friday last week.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98812\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98812\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-98812\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/IMG_5399_96535.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cyndi Lauper steps through the door to open her set.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The wait was worth it, as the British crooner put on a sprightly performance that belied his 78 years and thanked the big crowd repeatedly for their patience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Apologies for not being here last week, and I&#8217;m glad you lot turned up,&#8221; he quipped.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98814\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98814\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-98814\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/IMG_6384_32419.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stewart blows a kiss to a fan in the crowd.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Starting with a slick cover of Robert Palmer&#8217;s &#8220;Addicted to Love&#8221; complete with a cluster of blank-eyed backing musicians, the two-hour show had a bit of everything.<\/p>\n<p>This included two drumkits (both emblazoned with Stewart&#8217;s favourite soccer team Celtic FC), three costume changes &#8211; including one into blue and yellow as Stewart dedicated &#8220;Rhythm of My Heart&#8221; to the people of Ukraine &#8211; six backup singers\/dancers\/musicians, a harp, a soccer-inspired singalong to &#8220;You&#8217;re In My Heart&#8221;, and more covers including Etta James&#8217; &#8220;I&#8217;d Rather Go Blind&#8221; and The Impressions&#8217; &#8220;People Get Ready&#8221; in tribute to musical collaborator Jeff Beck.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98823\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98823\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-98823 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/IMG_6460_29423-600x380.jpg?_t=1680690865\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98823\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The gig at Mt Duneed Estate had a bit of everything.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There was also a tapdancing and fiddle solo, soccer balls thrown into the crowd while he made good on his promise to pull a random fan up on stage to share lead vocals on &#8220;Stay With Me&#8221;, and an early flub where he &#8220;forgot to sing [after being] distracted by the sign that said dumplings&#8217;!&#8221; that turned into a good-natured running joke.<\/p>\n<p>Support acts included Cyndi Lauper, similarly defying her age with an eclectic selection from her back catalogue; and Jon Stevens, who led his band through a mix of songs alternating between his time as frontman of Noiseworks and INXS.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98820\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98820\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-98820\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/IMG_5877_70552.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98820\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lauper&#8217;s set contained tunes from throughout her career.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SIR Rod Stewart finally sailed into Geelong at the fourth attempt, turning back the clock and wowing fans with a set full of hits at Mt Duneed Estate.
