THE Give Where You Live Foundation (GWYLF) have assisted in delivering a fairer community by working with several Geelong organisations to provide migrant students with computers to assist with their studies.<\/p>\n

Last week, the GWYLF ran its G21 Regional Opportunities for Work (GROW) program, facilitating a new relationship between GeelongPort and Catholic Care Victoria that resulted in the handover of 20 refurbished laptops.<\/p>\n

The laptops will help the newly migrated students who are living in the northern suburbs of Geelong to complete their Certificate 1 in English through Victoria University.<\/p>\n

GWYLF acting chief executive officer Meg Price said the foundation was inspired by the generosity of organisations such as GeelongPort who are helping to support those in need in the local community.<\/p>\n

“We’re working hard to create a fairer Geelong and we can only do that with the support of our community,” Ms Price said.<\/p>\n

Because of this incredible support, our community partner organisations can make real change to many people’s lives.”<\/p>\n

Catholic Care Victoria’s Sarah Cunningham said they were overwhelmed and grateful for the donation from GeelongPort.<\/p>\n

“These devices have been so warmly received\u2026 this program is only working due to so many generous donations and partnerships and we just didn’t have the funds to purchase new devices for each student,” Ms Cunningham said.<\/p>\n

“The computers will benefit the students’ studies, employability and communication skills and relieve some financial pressure for them and their families.”<\/p>\n

GeelongPort chief executive officer Brett Winter said the organisation were proud to help local youth in gaining new language skills that can help them land on their feet in Australia.<\/p>\n

“It’s great to see our refurbished computers providing so much benefit to new Geelong families.<\/p>\n

“The ability to communicate and stay connected is so important for the growth and mental health of young refugees in our community.”<\/p>\n
