THE Victorian Transport Accident Commission (TAC) are calling on young creatives to see if their ideas can help save lives through the 2023 Split Second competition.<\/p>\n

Returning for its fifth edition, the competition invites participants aged between 18-25 who want to improve road safety for their peers to submit a script and storyboard for a short film focusing on either drowsy driving or vehicle safety.<\/p>\n

Winners will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a $70,000 production budget for the film idea of their choice, while the runner-up will be awarded a $30,000 production budget and will work with prestigious production entity Sweetshop to bring their entry to life.<\/p>\n

In response to the Barwon South West region already having 11 fatal crashes to date this year (up from seven this time last year), TAC Head of Road Safety Samanta Cockfield said road safety and awareness was as important as it had ever been.<\/p>\n

“The Split Second competition prides itself on giving young Victorians the opportunity to use their story and film making skills to directly communicate with peers on important road safety issues.<\/p>\n

“Reducing the prevalence of drowsy driving, and promoting vehicle safety, are critical in improving road safety outcomes for young Victorians.<\/p>\n

“By engaging young creatives in the process we’re ensuring that messages are delivered in a relatable way.”<\/p>\n

The Split Second competition has received 675 entries since launching in 2018 and has produced four films, helping to kickstart careers and awareness of road safety.<\/p>\n

The winning film will launch at ACMI later this year and will continue to be aired in cinemas across the state between October and November 2023, with the runner up film being promoted via social media.<\/p>\n
