{"id":72197,"date":"2023-05-17T04:00:38","date_gmt":"2023-05-16T18:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=72197"},"modified":"2023-05-11T13:15:47","modified_gmt":"2023-05-11T03:15:47","slug":"regions-conservation-excellence-awarded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/regions-conservation-excellence-awarded\/","title":{"rendered":"Region&#8217;s conservation excellence awarded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A CAREFULLY restored former garage is among the winners of this year&#8217;s local National Trust Heritage Awards.<\/p>\n<p>The awards, organised by the Geelong and Region branch of Australia&#8217;s leading conservation organisation with support from the City of Greater Geelong, celebrate the contribution made to heritage conservation by owners, architects, designers and specialised tradespeople.<\/p>\n<p>The former Richardson&#8217;s Garage at 151 Mercer Street, Geelong was one of seven winners announced at last week&#8217;s ceremony at Little Creatures Brewery.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_103024\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103024\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-103024 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/IMG_7948_19297-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1683774613\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103024\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The awards celebrate the contribution made to heritage conservation by owners, architects, designers and specialised tradespeople. Photo: JAMES TAYLOR<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Built in 1921, the building was restored to close to its original appearance and brought back to life with the removal of the exterior painting, and the construction and adaptation of missing elements on the front fa\u00e7ade.<\/p>\n<p>The reconstruction and restoration &#8211; part of the city&#8217;s works on the Wurriki Nyal Civic Precinct &#8211; celebrates the building as largely originally intended, and it is also a reminder of Geelong&#8217;s automotive history.<\/p>\n<p>The other six winners were:<\/p>\n<p>Village 11 Cinema, 192-194 Ryrie Street, Geelong<\/p>\n<p>The Grand Hotel, 76 Newcombe Street, Portarlington<\/p>\n<p>Geelong West grandstands, West Oval, Church Street, North Geelong<\/p>\n<p>Former Portarlington Post Office, 1 Harding Street, Portarlington<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Strathcona&#8221;, 2-4 Ascot Street, Newtown, and<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Eurymina&#8221;, 93 Prospect Road, Newtown.<\/p>\n<p>National Trust Geelong and Region Branch representative Jennifer Bantow said she was delighted with the good mix of private and public places, and commercial and residential properties in the 2023 awards, which return after a two-year COVID-enforced absence.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_103022\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103022\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-103022 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/PXL_20230227_071508_68685-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1683774566\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103022\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The works at the former Portarlington post office have returned this heritage landmark to its intended appearance, celebrating the craftsmanship of the brickwork and the Flemish design.
