{"id":74032,"date":"2023-06-07T08:46:16","date_gmt":"2023-06-06T22:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=74032"},"modified":"2023-06-07T08:51:14","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T22:51:14","slug":"american-truck-maker-targets-geelong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/american-truck-maker-targets-geelong\/","title":{"rendered":"American truck maker targets Geelong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A UNITED States ute manufacturer is planning to set up shop in Geelong with a new dealership in Geelong West.<\/p>\n<p>RAM has applied to convert 5-7 Pakington Street into a car sales site and would build illuminated business signs under a planning permit application now being advertised by the City of Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>It would be the manufacturer&#8217;s first foray into Geelong, with dealers already established at Footscray, Ballarat and Warrnambool as the nearest to the city.<\/p>\n<p>The property at the far northern end of Pakington Street has an existing building that has previously been used as a fresh food store. It also falls under the city&#8217;s proposed Pakington Street North Urban Development Framework (UDF).<\/p>\n<p>An interim report from 2021 earmarks the site and its surrounds for commercial use.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74034\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74034\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74034\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/06\/image2a_40514.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74034\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">5-7 Pakington Street would become a RAM dealership under the plans. Photos: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Community concerns with the UDF have primarily centered around building heights and traffic impacts.<\/p>\n<p>No increase to building height is proposed in the application, and it argues its traffic impact would be &#8220;negligible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The proposal represents a contemporary form which is respectful of the existing character of buildings within the Sturt Street Heritage Precinct whilst maintaining the heritage fa\u00e7ades of Sturt Street buildings,&#8221; planning documents stated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The proposal will provide a high level of internal amenity for future occupants.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No unreasonable amenity impacts will occur to any of the surrounding properties as a result of the activities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Submissions on the proposal close on June 10.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A UNITED States ute manufacturer is planning to set up shop in Geelong with a new dealership in Geelong West.
