{"id":74308,"date":"2023-06-14T04:00:34","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T18:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=74308"},"modified":"2023-06-29T08:51:18","modified_gmt":"2023-06-28T22:51:18","slug":"wellness-hub-connects-local-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/wellness-hub-connects-local-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"Wellness hub connects local youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AN ELIA Wellness Hub at Norlane is helping young people across the region find social and community connection while enjoying fresh and free food.<\/p>\n<p>The after-school run program provides youths with a space to play games, socialise and connect with others within their community.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74309\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74309\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74309 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/06\/kjlklj_60364-600x380.jpg?_t=1686100447\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The community outreach service is run out of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Norlane.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The outreach service has been running every fortnight on a Tuesday afternoon since September last year and is facilitated by keen volunteers who are out to make a positive difference in their own backyard.<\/p>\n<p>Founder Michelle Van Egmond said the service aimed to help people in need.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We recognised there was a need for activities and youth engagement within the Norlane community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After consulting and working with the Avery Caf\u00e9 nearby, we found that youth were becoming disengaged and community connection was lacking.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ultimately our ten or so volunteers each week are there to provide that youth mentorship to the children and to help them develop resilience, positive mental health and food service skills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While they haven&#8217;t been open for a very long time, Mrs Van Egmond said it has been wonderful to see the program become gradually more popular over the past few months.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74314\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74314\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74314\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/06\/kljklj_60431.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74314\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">.The Elia Wellness Hub also sell food and drinks at markets and events to bring some extra funds into the program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are really happy with how it has been going.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It took us a bit to get the word out there about what we are doing, but now that we&#8217;ve gained a bit more support it&#8217;s been really steady.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are always happy to see more and more children using the service\u2026 that&#8217;s what we are here for.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are also always willing to have more volunteers jump on board to help us out!&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74319\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74319\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74319 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/06\/jk_60356-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1686100480\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74319\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The program is volunteer-led and involves plenty of fun activities and promotes social connection.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Elia Wellness Hub is thankful for community donations including two grants from Elia Wellness and the City of Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers also sell food and drinks at local markets and events, to support the program.<\/p>\n<p>The next youth meet is on June 13 from 3.15pm to 5.15pm at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church on Donnybrook Road, Norlane.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AN ELIA Wellness Hub at Norlane is helping young people across the region find social and community connection while enjoying fresh and free food.
