{"id":75573,"date":"2023-06-17T04:00:18","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T18:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=75573"},"modified":"2023-06-14T15:50:42","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T05:50:42","slug":"lets-talk-risky-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/lets-talk-risky-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s talk risky business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><strong>A show coming to Geelong Arts Centre later this month will enter risky territory and pose some difficult questions about the level of diversity in Australian performing arts.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Described as part performance and part panel discussion, <em>Risky Business: A little show and a big conversation <\/em>is directed by Kate Hood and features facilitator Zoe Boesen and three award-winning performers: Andy Jackson, Eliza Hull and Olivia Muscat.<\/p>\n<p>The unique show explores the ongoing practice and future development of disability and its true representation in the arts, delivering surprising insights and fresh perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>It addresses the questions surrounding disability that society is often afraid to ask, and puts the voices and experiences of deaf and disabled artists at the heart of the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to participating in the discussion, each of the performers will showcase a performance piece.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_106077\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106077\" style=\"width: 342px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-106077 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/OliviaMuscatHeads_21604-1-e1686721573252-342x380.jpg?_t=1686721577\" alt=\"\" width=\"342\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-106077\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Olivia Muscat is a writer, critic and performer whose work has featured in several anthologies and on various places across the internet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jackson will perform his poems &#8220;Quasimodo&#8221; and &#8220;Unfinished&#8221;; Hull will perform her song &#8220;Running Underwater&#8221;, as seen on ABC TV\u2019s <em>Q+A;<\/em> and Muscat will perform a theatrical piece written for non-disabled actors, accompanied by local artist Libby Brockman.The show was created by Hood, artistic director of Raspberry Ripple Productions, a disability-led theatre company that is bridging the gap between disability and mainstream performing arts.<\/p>\n<p>Raspberry Ripple operates around the social model of disability, aiming to create theatre of a professional standard using disabled performers, writers, directors, designers and technical artists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a great reluctance in Australia to acknowledge that disability is simply part of the human condition, and that performers with disability can add a dimension that has never been seen before,&#8221; Hood said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Risky Business<\/em> is supported by Geelong Arts Centre&#8217;s Creative Engine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Geelong Arts Centre, we take pride in platforming diverse art forms of all abilities,&#8221; Geelong Arts Centre head of programming Penny McCabe said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Risky Business<\/em> is an informative venture into the depths of disability and the unique perspectives it affords.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_106069\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106069\" style=\"width: 421px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-106069 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/AndyJackson3450_17881-e1686721620379-421x380.jpeg?_t=1686721623\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-106069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andy Jackson is a poet, creative writing teacher, and the inaugural Writing the Future of Health Fellow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Risky Business: A little show and a big conversation <\/em>will be performed at Geelong Arts Centre (Limelight Studio 4) on June 28 at 3pm and 6.30pm.<\/p>\n<p>To buy tickets, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/geelongartscentre.org.au\/creative-engine\/risky-business\"><strong>geelongartscentre.org.au\/creative-engine\/risky-business<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This project is supported by the City of Greater Geelong through its Creative Communities Grant Program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A show coming to Geelong Arts Centre later this month will enter risky territory and pose some difficult questions about the level of diversity in Australian performing arts.
