LOCAL racing talent was on show internationally at the weekend, with a horse from Torquay-based syndicator Bennett Racing finishing fifth at one of the world’s most prestigious racing meets.<\/p>\n
The Astrologist was one of 16 thoroughbred horses in the field of Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, held on the fifth and final day of Royal Ascot.<\/p>\n
Run every year at Ascot Racecourse since 1868, the stakes acquired its Group 1 status and present name in 2002 in honour of the queen’s 50th year as monarch.<\/p>\n
The Astrologist is well known in Geelong racing circles – it was a winner at the Geelong Cup meeting in 2020 – and has several local owners.<\/p>\n
The six-year-old bay horse led the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (which featured three other Australian horses) from the early stages but was overtaken with about a furlong to go, with 80\/1 outsider Khaadem a surprise winner.<\/p>\n
Bennett Racing owner Nathan Bennett had two other runners at Royal Ascot: Ardakan, which finished seventh of seven in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes; and Warnie, which finished ninth of 16 in the listed Chesham Stakes.<\/p>\n
Speaking to the media before Saturday’s racing, Mr Bennett said about 80 owners of the Australian horses had made the trip to Royal Ascot, and his syndicate was doing well.<\/p>\n
“We’ve had a good period and we’ve put a lot of hard work in, and it’s starting to pay dividends.<\/p>\n
“We’ve certainly got shares available, and people can call me direct and get involved.<\/p>\n
“I think just to have the three runners here is a win, whatever happens on the track.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
