Photos: VINNIE VAN OORSCHOT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Memorial committee member Jeff Harriott said the annual July service received a tremendous turnout.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From my point of view, I\u2019m always a little bit stressed about the running of the service until the service is done, but once I saw the weather was going to hold up, I knew it was going to be a good day,\u201d Mr Harriott said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/07\/IMG_9927_73746.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"535\" height=\"357\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Commodore Greg Yorke conducts his speech as guest speaker.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The service was run by master of ceremonies Captain (ACC) Mark Lee with music provided by the Geelong Memorial Brass Band and Sing Australia Geelong Choir.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s service was the 104th anniversary of the Reserve\u2019s Avenue of Honour being planted in 1919.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 513px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/07\/IMG_9805_73709.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"513\" height=\"342\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More than 200 were in attendance for the service.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This year\u2019s guest speaker was Senior Naval Officer of Victoria commodore Greg Yorke.<\/p>\n<p>The wreath-laying ceremony and reading of The Ode was conducted by Geelong RSL president Andrew Hanns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of organisations working together to make the service run seamlessly and each year it\u2019s great to see the community come as one,\u201d Mr Harriott said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis service means so much to so many and we\u2019re happy to host it each July.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/07\/IMG_9841_73691.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"340\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Geelong RSL president Andrew Haans and Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Attendees met at Waurn Ponds Hall for light refreshments following the service.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 200 residents, dignitaries and visitors gathered at Waurn Ponds War Memorial Reserve last Sunday to pay their respects and remember local servicemen and servicewomen that made the ultimate sacrifice in times of war.
