{"id":78031,"date":"2023-07-06T09:43:31","date_gmt":"2023-07-05T23:43:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/villawood-spells-it-out-for-naidoc-week\/"},"modified":"2023-07-06T09:43:31","modified_gmt":"2023-07-05T23:43:31","slug":"villawood-spells-it-out-for-naidoc-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/villawood-spells-it-out-for-naidoc-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Villawood spells it out for NAIDOC Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VILLAWOOD Properties and Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation (WTOAC) have teamed up to create a striking NAIDOC Week message in Mount Duneed.<\/p>\n<p>The latest arrangement of Villawood\u2019s corten steel letters at the Armstrong Mt Duneed estate is \u201cGobata\u201d, chosen to to highlight the annual celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.<\/p>\n<p>NAIDOC &#8211; the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee &#8211; is promoting the theme \u2018For Our Elders\u2019 in for NAIDOC Week in 2023, which began on Sunday this week and runs until Sunday, July 9.<\/p>\n<p>Wadawurrung woman and WTOAC recognition and negotiations general manager said Rebekah Devlin said this year\u2019s theme dovetailed with the letters\u2019 message<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur elders shape and guide each generation, passing on cultural knowledge to ensure we all understand our cultural obligation to take care of Wadawurrung Country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Wadawurrung language, we do not have a word for goodbye as we hope to see you again; we say \u2018Gobata\u2019 instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Gobata\u2019 means take care, but it can be used in many contexts: take care of each other, of yourself, of Country \u2013 but it is up to all of us to take care of our elders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something we can all aspire to, not just during NAIDOC Week, but every week \u2013 ensuring our Elders are cared for and treated with the respect they so dearly deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WTOAC chief executive officer Liam Murphy thanked Villawood Properties for its support in giving more visibility to Wadawurrung language on the Surf Coast Highway.<\/p>\n<p>He said he would love to see a permanent installation of letters reading \u201cWadawurrung Country\u201d somewhere in the region one day.<\/p>\n<p>Villawood executive director Rory Costelloe said the \u2018Gobata\u2019 signage was an important message by the community for the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNAIDOC Week is a great time for people to learn about First Nations cultures and histories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018Gobata\u2019 message is a warm and welcoming message, an invitation to acknowledge one of the oldest, continuous living cultures on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur First Nations are an integral part of Australia \u2013 a part we can share and celebrate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information on NAIDOC Week, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/naidoc.org.au\">naidoc.org.au<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VILLAWOOD Properties and Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation (WTOAC) have teamed up to create a striking NAIDOC Week message in Mount Duneed.
