Photos: VINNIE VAN OORSCHOT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Jan Juc resident said the tree was worthy of being placed on the National Trust&#8217;s Register of Significant Trees of Victoria in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s only a baby at 150 years; these trees can live up to 3,500 years at most.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The tree is also one of the garden&#8217;s oldest, planted four years later than the Geelong Botanic Gardens&#8217; maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78223\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78223\" style=\"width: 534px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-78223\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/07\/IMG_0610_49890-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/07\/IMG_0610_49890-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/07\/IMG_0610_49890-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/07\/IMG_0610_49890-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/07\/IMG_0610_49890.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78223\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 150-year-old Sierra Redwood can live up to 3,500 in the correct environment.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The tree&#8217;s seed was brought over to Australia from California&#8217;s Sierra Nevada mountain range to be germinated.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Muntz said the tree&#8217;s population continued to decline in the wild for two reason.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;First, climate change has led to less water falling as snow, so less snow melt means trees can&#8217;t cope with the long, dry summers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Second, seeds don&#8217;t grow in forests protected from fire. The ground litter is too deep.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Geelong Botanic Gardens coordinator Kellee Reissinger said the tree has flourished as a result of meticulous care and dedicated stewardship of the Gardens&#8217; workers and volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat sets this tree apart is not only its age, but its steady growth. Over the years it has demonstrated a medium growth rate, with an annual increase in height of approximately 30 centimeters,\u201d Ms Reissinger said.<\/p>\n<p>Acting Mayor Anthony Aitken said this is the perfect time to get together with family and friends to visit the beautiful Geelong Botanic Gardens and walk by the tree while admiring everything else the Gardens has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe invite residents and visitors to join us in celebrating the rich history and natural beauty of the Geelong Botanic Gardens.
