{"id":79424,"date":"2023-07-20T13:13:27","date_gmt":"2023-07-20T03:13:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=79424"},"modified":"2023-07-20T13:13:27","modified_gmt":"2023-07-20T03:13:27","slug":"police-run-weapons-blitz-in-geelongs-cbd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/police-run-weapons-blitz-in-geelongs-cbd\/","title":{"rendered":"Police run weapons blitz in Geelong&#8217;s CBD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>POLICE ran a blitz on people carrying weapons in Geelong&#8217;s CBD earlier this month, searching more than 40 people.<\/p>\n<p>No weapons were detected in the OMNI operation, which is the first in a series being staged in the area, and police will continue the bolstered presence as a deterrent to anyone considering carrying a prohibited weapon.<\/p>\n<p>The July 8 operation followed the police declaring a designated area under the Control of Weapons Act 1990 in central Geelong, allowing officers to search anyone for weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Police from the Geelong&#8217;s Divisional Response Unit, uniform police and the Public Order Response Team saturated the shopping precinct, bus interchanges and surrounding roads.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79429\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79429\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79429 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/07\/Omni-image2_61138_tn-600x380.png?_t=1689822684\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79429\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Units involved included police from the Geelong\u2019s Divisional Response Unit, uniform police and the Public Order Response Team.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A mobile policing unit \u2013 a large van fitted with similar equipment and technology found at a police station \u2013 was also deployed.<\/p>\n<p>Police spoke with more than 60 people during the safety effort, patrolled inside eight licensed venues, and checked 13 vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Police also intercepted a vehicle on Moorabool Street after the driver allegedly disobeyed a traffic sign.<\/p>\n<p>The driver, a 49-year-old from Ballarat was driving with a suspended license and will appear in court at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Operations like these send a clear message that carrying a knife won&#8217;t be tolerated,&#8221; Geelong local area commander Acting Inspector Nicholas Uebergang said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79430\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79430\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79430 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/07\/Omni-image1_24847_tn-600x380.png?_t=1689822775\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79430\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Police checked 13 vehicles during the operation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While knife crime typically occurs between people who know each other we understand the concern felt in the community when this offending unfolds on the streets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The community should be reassured we are doing all we can to detect offenders and seize their weapons before further harm occurs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In an ideal world, we wouldn&#8217;t have to run operations like these but make no apologies for targeting those carrying weapons and looking for trouble.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our number one priority is keeping people safe, and [the] operation is just one of many to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>POLICE ran a blitz on people carrying weapons in Geelong&#8217;s CBD earlier this month, searching more than 40 people.
