A REGIONAL awards program that celebrates the achievements of people living with disability has opened for 2023 nominations.<\/p>\n

The City of Greater Geelong has opened its Geelong Awards for People with Disability this month, which aim to recognise important work in advocacy, leadership, employment and empowering others.<\/p>\n

This year will be the awards’ eighth year and fourth partnered with local disability services provider genU. Barwon Disability Resource Council also supports the event.<\/p>\n

Award categories include the Achievement Award; Leadership and Advocacy Award; Volunteering Award; and Excellence in Employment Outcomes Award.<\/p>\n

Priscilla Pettiford won last year’s Leadership and Advocacy Award for her work in providing support and guidance to jobseekers of all ages with disabilities and helping them navigate services they might not be aware of.<\/p>\n

Ms Pettiford suffers from several health complications due to an autoimmune disorder and parents children with disabilities.<\/p>\n

She encouraged others to enter across Geelong, and said that “the significance of the awards cannot not be understated”.<\/p>\n

“These awards are important for the community as it shows those with a disability that their work can be recognised and validated.<\/p>\n

“I encourage others to apply as it is a recognition of what they do and provides an opportunity, opening doors to things like a live radio interview, which I would not normally have the chance to participate in.<\/p>\n

“It’s also provided an avenue to network with others in the community who share the same values and passion.”<\/p>\n

genU CEO Claire Amies said she was “delighted” to again present the awards.<\/p>\n

“We are proud to be a founding partner of these awards and excited to continue our involvement again this year.<\/p>\n

“These awards not only recognise people living with a disability, but importantly, they recognise people who are making significant contributions to our local community.<\/p>\n

COGG mayor Trent Sullivan said the awards were “an important part of the City’s work in building an accessible and inclusive community for all while celebrating the achievements of those with disability”.<\/p>\n

Award winners will be recognised at the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre on December 1.<\/p>\n

Nominations close on Monday, September 25 at 5pm.<\/p>\n
