THE City of Greater Geelong has been recognised for its use of innovative technology to enhance and uplift its Smart City projects by the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV).<\/p>\n

The city was a finalist in three categories at the MAV Technology Annual Conference Awards for Excellence, which celebrated the achievements of Victorian councils.<\/p>\n

A project using specially designed smart sensors and irrigation infrastructure in Eastern Park for protecting gray-headed flying foxes won in the Emerging Technology category and was highly commended in the Collaboration or Partnership category.<\/p>\n

It aims to reduce the risk of dehydration, heat stress, and death within the colony by monitoring temperature and humidity levels and cooling the environment when required.<\/p>\n

The project is supported by the Victorian government through a $100,000 contribution.<\/p>\n

The city’s Unlocking Data-Driven Transport Innovations project was also highly commended in the Data and Insights category.<\/p>\n

This project integrates big data, computer vision, artificial intelligence, and digital twin capabilities to help the city to better understand the region’s transportation challenges including the affect of road closures, major events, weather, and infrastructure developments.<\/p>\n

Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said it was exciting the city had been acknowledged for its embrace of digital technology.<\/p>\n

“Utilising innovative technology is helping us address challenges ranging from biodiversity to transport and provide more efficient services to our growing community.<\/p>\n

“This is just one of the ways we are working towards the community’s Clever and Creative vision.<\/p>\n

“The Geelong region is building an international reputation as a forward-looking smart city.<\/p>\n

“We’ve also been named a Top7 Smart Community of 2023 and last year’s International Smart City of the Year alongside Barcelona City.<\/p>\n

“This is reflective of the smart tech efforts from across the community, from the education and manufacturing sectors to community groups.”<\/p>\n
