{"id":83039,"date":"2023-09-07T11:46:11","date_gmt":"2023-09-07T01:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=83039"},"modified":"2023-09-07T11:46:11","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T01:46:11","slug":"portarlington-artist-breaking-world-record-one-page-at-a-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/portarlington-artist-breaking-world-record-one-page-at-a-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Portarlington artist breaking world record one page at a time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LOCAL artist has put the call out to Greater Geelong residents to assist her in breaking a Guinness World Record through a series of workshops across the region.<\/p>\n<p>Local Portarlington artist of 37 years, Fern Smith, is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for \u201cThe longest book in the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The record, currently held by Yang Shuanming in Taiyuan, Shanxi China, measures 814.26 metres in the form of a concertina book, a fold-out book that extends horizontally similar to an accordion.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Smith will aim to break the record also in the form of a concertina book.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/8db98ff0a95e582-lon_91624.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"507\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of Fern Smith&#8217;s favourite pages in her book is a embroidered work of Cunningham Pier. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She began the project in October last year and is conducting a series of workshops across Geelong and the Bellarine, inviting residents to assist in the designs of each page.<\/p>\n<p>Each workshop encourages participants to contribute and design a page to the book.<\/p>\n<p>Contributions can be done through a range of art techniques including drawing, collage or micro-writing, drawing inspiration from their own experiences and perspectives related to the City of Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s more of a community book than mine, I\u2019m more of a facilitator,\u201d Ms Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe book can have a broad range of artwork, whether it be through words or pictures. It will all relate back to the region we all live in and love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Ms Smith\u2019s book\u2019s length currently measures at 37 metres, she says the number of pages will quickly grow through invitations to major art events and festivals.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 723px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/IMG_4341_78660.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"723\" height=\"482\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fern Smith (right) with her book running up the Lara Library ramp, with library coordinator Sandra Dunstone (left).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a slow art project, by no means will it be rushed, but if everything continues ticking along as it has, I expect to have the book done within the next two years,\u201d Ms Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing others creating art, expressing themselves by contributing to this book, that is what rocks my boat as an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The book is already supported by Geelong Writers Incorporated and the Geelong Regional Libraries Corporation with workshops hosted at local libraries across the region.<\/p>\n<p>Once the book approaches completion, Ms Smith will need find a site to reveal the book in its final form to be officially adjudicated by a Guinness World Record judge.<\/p>\n<p>For the full list of upcoming local workshops and how to be a part of the \u2018Longest Book in the World\u2019, head to www.fernartz.com\/the-longest-book-in-the-world\/<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A LOCAL artist has put the call out to Greater Geelong residents to assist her in breaking a Guinness World Record through a series of workshops across the region.
