{"id":83860,"date":"2023-09-14T10:37:18","date_gmt":"2023-09-14T00:37:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=83860"},"modified":"2023-09-14T10:37:18","modified_gmt":"2023-09-14T00:37:18","slug":"dragons-return-to-barwon-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/dragons-return-to-barwon-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Dragons return to Barwon River"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DRAGON boat crews from across Victoria made the Barwon River their arena on Sunday for the annual Battle of the Barwon.<\/p>\n<p>Over 350 competitors took part in the annual rowing regatta well serviced by local traders, as racing took place throughout the entire day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 472px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/MyRoom-11_60900.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"472\" height=\"315\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Heather Watts, Mick Curran, and Jim Callahan of the Gippsland Water Dragons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Host club Geelong Dragon Boat Club vice president Margaret Harry said the Battle of the Barwon is always a jolly occasion, now a regular fixture in the dragon boat calendar for over 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 481px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/MyRoom-44_60914.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"321\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Time-keeper volunteers watch the action from the banks.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s less structured than most other regattas and there is a bit more time for people to get around and socialise with each other, so it&#8217;s a fun and sociable event for sure,&#8221; Ms Harry said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of interaction amongst the club in one way or another.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Dragon Boat Club runs the event in conjunction with Dragon Boat Victoria, the sport&#8217;s governing body in the state.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 497px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/MyRoom-21_61030.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"497\" height=\"332\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of Dragons Abreast Geelong Juggernauts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The club receives a large amount of kudos for running the regatta each year, often good feedback from competitors in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The club is always very proud to run this event each year, it unofficially launches the season for our members, and we&#8217;ve been blessed with good weather over the last few years,&#8221; Ms Harry said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s also a relief to get the event under our belt, because it is a big job for the club.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The next major event for the dragon boat community is Dragon Spirit which will be held in Victoria Harbour, Docklands on October 14.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DRAGON boat crews from across Victoria made the Barwon River their arena on Sunday for the annual Battle of the Barwon.
