	{"id":83902,"date":"2023-09-17T04:01:34","date_gmt":"2023-09-16T18:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=83902"},"modified":"2023-09-14T11:11:26","modified_gmt":"2023-09-14T01:11:26","slug":"cogg-2024-youth-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/cogg-2024-youth-council\/","title":{"rendered":"COGG 2024 Youth Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>YOUNG people across the City of Greater Geelong passionate about making a difference in the community are encouraged to nominate for the city&#8217;s 2024 Youth Council.<\/p>\n<p>The group comprises 12 young people aged between 12 and 17 who act as an official advisory committee to the council.<\/p>\n<p>Nominees will be voted on by members of youth advisory groups, with three youth representatives to be selected for each of the municipality&#8217;s four wards: Bellarine, Brownbill, Kardinia and Windermere.<\/p>\n<p>The 12 successful candidates will then elect the Junior Mayor and Junior Deputy Mayor to represent the group.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan encouraged community-minded young people across the region to put their hand up for nomination.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Youth Councillors are the official &#8216;youth voice&#8217; from within our community to assist the council in understanding what the priorities are for the region&#8217;s youth,&#8221; Cr Sullivan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Being a part of Youth Council also help our region&#8217;s young people to learn more about local government while informing and influencing council decisions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want a diverse Youth Council that&#8217;s representative of the entire Greater Geelong community, so we encourage everyone to consider nominating, regardless of previous leadership experience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our youth councillors will be supported by our Youth Development team and have the chance to develop their skills through a range of different learning opportunities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Youth Council members meet monthly and advise the council on important issues such as mental health, climate change, diversity, and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Youth Council members are also actively involved in training and development, invited to council events, and participate in the Councillor Connect Mentoring program.<\/p>\n<p>Incumbent Junior Mayor Irene Mulilo said the 2023 Youth Councillors had found the experience highly valuable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve certainly enjoyed the opportunity to have my voice heard, along with learning more about processes at a local government level.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important that Council understands what matters to young people within our community and becoming a part of Youth Council is a practical way to achieve that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every member of Youth Council joins from a different background and with different ideas and priorities for the future, so I encourage all young people to consider becoming a part of this exciting opportunity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The first Youth Council for the City of Greater Geelong was elected in 2019, following the recommendations of the Citizens&#8217; Jury.<\/p>\n<p>Nominations are open until October 20 and can be made at <a href=\"http:\/\/geelongaustralia.com.au\/youthcouncil.\">geelongaustralia.com.au\/youthcouncil.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>YOUNG people across the City of Greater Geelong passionate about making a difference in the community are encouraged to nominate for the city&#8217;s 2024 Youth Council.
