{"id":84479,"date":"2023-09-21T11:16:40","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T01:16:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=84479"},"modified":"2023-09-21T11:19:28","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T01:19:28","slug":"stamp-and-coin-fair-locked-in-for-october-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/stamp-and-coin-fair-locked-in-for-october-return\/","title":{"rendered":"Stamp and Coin Fair locked in for October return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A VAST array of coin and stamp collections will fill Geelong West Town Hall next month at an annual fair with hundreds of Geelong residents expected to attend.<\/p>\n<p>The Geelong Philatelic and Numismatic Societies will host the Geelong Stamp and Coin Fair again on October 14, the societies&#8217; biggest event of the year dating back to 2008.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 464px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/IMG_6475_46770.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"464\" height=\"309\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Geelong Philatelic Society secretary and president Julie Turner and Ian Grant out front of Geelong West Town Hall with an assortment coins and stamps &#8211; just a taste of what will be on display on October 14.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Philatelic Society president Ian Grant said the fair provides an opportunity for stamp and coin collectors to share their interests and access dealers face-to-face.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s also a wonderful chance for the community to come out and browse the deep history of stamps and coins that Australia has used and sold in its history,&#8221; Mr Grant said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We often see community members visit the Fair who have attended it since the early years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Geelong Stamp and Coin Fair each year is held during the City of Greater Geelong&#8217;s Seniors Festival on the second Saturday in October.<\/p>\n<p>There will be 24 stamp and coin dealers at the event occupying 62 tables.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 459px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/IMG_9689_46814.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"459\" height=\"306\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Geelong Stamp and Coin Fair is jointly hosted by the Geelong Philatelic and Numismatic Societies.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Club members from the Geelong Philatelic Society and Geelong Numismatic Society will also have tables at the fair for informational purposes.<\/p>\n<p>The Fair&#8217;s first year achieved an attendance of 120 people in 2008 and has gradually increased in size since.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018 and 2019 over 700 people attended the Fair before lockdowns shut down the event in 2020 and 2021. The Fair rebounded in 2022 with over 600 people attending.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Philatelic Society secretary Julie Turner said people who have previously collected stamps and coins are now showing a renewed interest in the hobby.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having access to many dealers is important where there is limited access to dealers through the internet,&#8221; Ms Turner said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fairs like this can be imperative for people who wish to get advice on their collections or for disposal purposes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We also provide a relaxed atmosphere where people can sit down and share a free cup of tea or coffee and talk about their hobby.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_84485\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84485\" style=\"width: 479px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-84485\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/MG_8314_46803.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"479\" height=\"319\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-84485\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Last year&#8217;s Fair was hosted after two years of cancellations.
