THE City of Greater Geelong has received a national innovation accolade for its use of smart technologies to make the region more resilient to climate change.<\/p>\n

The City was the only local government authority across Australia and New Zealand to be recognised on the 2023 Australian Financial Review BOSS Most Innovative Companies list on Tuesday evening in Sydney.<\/p>\n

Guided by its Smart City Strategic Framework and the Climate Change Response Plan 2021-30, the City has embraced world class technologies and created initiatives to respond to the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n

Innovative solutions such as weather sensors, digital twins, artificial intelligence, custom built marine furniture and digital wayfinding have helped improve local climate risk knowledge.<\/p>\n

Mayor Trent Sullivan said he is thrilled the City of Greater Geelong is so highly regarded for their innovation.<\/p>\n

“We are so proud to be a Smart City leader on the world stage through our innovation and forward-thinking mindset.<\/p>\n

“The City embraces cutting edge technology and a culture of innovation, in our pursuit of seeing Greater Geelong recognised internationally as a clever and creative city.<\/p>\n

“We are driven to improve services to the community, support and enhance our unique biodiversity and create a more sustainable, inclusive and innovative region.<\/p>\n

“This is a wonderful and exciting achievement for the community.”<\/p>\n

The City recently installed weather sensing equipment to monitors temperature and humidity levels within local Flying-Fox species.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

City of Greater Geelong chief executive officer, Alie Wastie said the recognition celebrated joint efforts and collaborations across the region.<\/p>\n

“We are committed to partnering with different levels of government, private industries, community groups and the education sector to collaborate with each other to create a better future for our people.<\/p>\n

“With access to climate data and smart technology, more people in the community are being inspired to act and be involved in clever local solutions.”<\/p>\n

The City’s other sustainability and technology achievements include being named a top 7 Smart Community of 2023 and receiving the 2022 International Smart City of the Year award alongside Barcelona City at the World Smart City Expo.<\/p>\n
