{"id":85763,"date":"2023-10-12T04:00:26","date_gmt":"2023-10-11T17:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/mcgettigan-and-huxtable-brave-elements-to-win-at-bells\/"},"modified":"2023-10-12T04:00:26","modified_gmt":"2023-10-11T17:00:26","slug":"mcgettigan-and-huxtable-brave-elements-to-win-at-bells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/sport\/mcgettigan-and-huxtable-brave-elements-to-win-at-bells\/","title":{"rendered":"McGettigan and Huxtable brave elements to win at Bells"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SURF Coast pair Emily McGettigan and Xavier Huxtable claimed top honours at the opening round of the Victorian Open Series at Bells Beach\/Djarrak over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>40 of the state&#8217;s best surfers battled wild and unruly four-to-six feet waves aiming to claim crucial state ranking points and a spot in the 2024 Rip Curl Pro Trials.<\/p>\n<p>Torquay surfer Emily McGettigan was able to utilise her local knowledge, winning all her heats throughout the day on her way to taking out the Open Women&#8217;s title.<\/p>\n<p>McGettigan was able to find the best waves during the final, top scoring with a 6.67 for a series of critical manoeuvres in the unruly conditions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_119075\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119075\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-119075\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/10\/Champions-untitled-132-2-Enhanced-NR-surfingpatrol.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-119075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Event winners Emily McGettigan and Xavier Huxtable.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The conditions were really tricky and there was a lot of water moving so heaps of paddling and duck diving but once you found a wave it was really fun,&#8221; McGettigan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m super stoked to surf bigger Bells with just the girls!
