{"id":85990,"date":"2023-10-19T10:23:47","date_gmt":"2023-10-18T23:23:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=85990"},"modified":"2023-10-19T10:23:47","modified_gmt":"2023-10-18T23:23:47","slug":"majority-of-geelong-region-says-no-to-the-voice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/majority-of-geelong-region-says-no-to-the-voice\/","title":{"rendered":"Majority of Geelong region says &#8220;no&#8221; to the Voice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AT LEAST half of residents in the Geelong region voted against establishing a Voice to Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>The result broadly reflects the national response to Saturday&#8217;s referendum, with voters in Wannon recording a vote even higher than the 60.69 per cent &#8220;no&#8221; majority.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Australian Electoral Commission&#8217;s (AEC) &#8220;Tally Room&#8221; website, as of Tuesday this week, 52.42 per cent of the Corangamite electorate had voted &#8220;no&#8221;, compared to 47.58 per cent for &#8220;yes&#8221;, and there were 903 informal votes.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 44 polling locations in Corangamite, there was a majority of &#8220;yes&#8221; voters in only 17 places:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Armstrong Creek East<\/li>\n<li>Barwon Heads<\/li>\n<li>Bellbrae<\/li>\n<li>Charlemont<\/li>\n<li>Highton South (Corangamite), by only five votes<\/li>\n<li>Moriac<\/li>\n<li>Mount Duneed Upper<\/li>\n<li>Ocean Grove<\/li>\n<li>Ocean Grove South<\/li>\n<li>Ocean Grove West<\/li>\n<li>Point Lonsdale<\/li>\n<li>Queenscliff<\/li>\n<li>Special Hospital Team 3<\/li>\n<li>Torquay<\/li>\n<li>Torquay Corangamite Pre-Poll Voting Centre (PPVC)<\/li>\n<li>Torquay East, and<\/li>\n<li>Torquay North.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wallington voted &#8220;no&#8221; by only three votes, and Beacon Point voted &#8220;no&#8221; by only seven votes.<\/p>\n<p>In Corio, to the north, 54.90 per cent of the electorate voted &#8220;no&#8221; while 45.10 per cent voted &#8220;yes&#8221;, alongside 970 informal votes.<\/p>\n<p>The electorate&#8217;s 41 polling places recorded a &#8220;no&#8221; vote in 21 of them, with the 20 majority &#8220;yes&#8221; locations being:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Belmont<\/li>\n<li>Belmont North<\/li>\n<li>Geelong<\/li>\n<li>Geelong South<\/li>\n<li>Geelong West<\/li>\n<li>eelong West Upper<\/li>\n<li>Hamlyn Heights, by only 17 votes<\/li>\n<li>Herne Hill<\/li>\n<li>Highton<\/li>\n<li>Highton North<\/li>\n<li>Highton South (Corio)<\/li>\n<li>Highton West<\/li>\n<li>Lara CBD<\/li>\n<li>Lara East, by only six votes<\/li>\n<li>Manifold Heights<\/li>\n<li>Newtown<\/li>\n<li>Newtown South<\/li>\n<li>Other Mobile Team 1 (across multiple sites), and<\/li>\n<li>Two of the three Special Hospital Teams, with the third voting &#8220;no&#8221; by only four votes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Wannon, which starts at Anglesea and stretches south and west all the way to the South Australian border, there was a 68.62 per cent &#8220;no&#8221; vote, with 942 informal votes.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 98 polling places, only 10 had a &#8220;yes&#8221; majority:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aireys Inlet<\/li>\n<li>Anglesea<\/li>\n<li>Apollo Bay<\/li>\n<li>Birregurra<\/li>\n<li>Deans Marsh<\/li>\n<li>Forrest<\/li>\n<li>Gellibrand River<\/li>\n<li>Lavers Hill<\/li>\n<li>Port Fairy, and<\/li>\n<li>Torquay Wannon PPVC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Special Hospital Team 4 in Wannon recorded a &#8220;no&#8221; majority by seven votes, Barwon Wannon PPVC voted &#8220;no&#8221; by four votes, and Warrnambool was a dead heat at 345 votes each.<\/p>\n<p>The AEC opened more than 7,000 polling places across Australia on Saturday, and will take up to 13 days from that date to record postal votes.<\/p>\n<p>For the full results, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/tallyroom.aec.gov.au\/ReferendumNationalResults-29581.htm\">tallyroom.aec.gov.au\/ReferendumNationalResults-29581.htm<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AT LEAST half of residents in the Geelong region voted against establishing a Voice to Parliament.
