	{"id":86114,"date":"2023-10-22T04:35:08","date_gmt":"2023-10-21T17:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=86114"},"modified":"2023-10-19T14:41:57","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T03:41:57","slug":"cemeteries-trust-keeps-blue-tree-initiative-growing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/cemeteries-trust-keeps-blue-tree-initiative-growing\/","title":{"rendered":"Cemeteries Trust keeps Blue Tree initiative growing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ANOTHER Blue Tree has grown in the Geelong region, with the Geelong Cemeteries Trust revealing its contribution to the national initiative.<\/p>\n<p>The sculptural tree in the grounds of Geelong Memorial Park was officially launched on Tuesday last week.<\/p>\n<p>It is part of the Blue Tree Project, a mental health awareness initiative that aims to spark difficult conversations and encourage people to speak up when battling mental health concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The launch also marked National Paint a Blue Tree Day and World Mental Health Day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_119733\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119733\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-119733 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/10\/DeanMatthews-CEOGee_45514.jpg?_t=1697686702\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"389\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-119733\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geelong Cemeteries Trust chief executive officer Dean Matthews.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Attendees included Geelong MP Christine Couzens and City of Greater Geelong councillors Melissa Cadwell and Peter Murrihy.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Greater Geelong has a higher percentage rate of mental health conditions (11.1 per cent) than the statewide and national average (8.8 per cent).<\/p>\n<p>Kim Edgar, a local mother and mental health and suicide prevention advocate spoke at the launch, poignantly talking about the significance of the Blue Tree Project.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Edgar lost her son to suicide in 2018 &#8211; the same year Jayden Whyte, who inspired the Blue Tree Project, took his own life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To have a tangible reminder of the significance of having those difficult conversations, seeking help and supporting others with their mental health is very powerful,&#8221; Geelong Cemeteries Trust chair John Mitchell said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-119731 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/10\/cemeteriestrustbl_35654.jpg?_t=1697686702\" alt=\"\" width=\"591\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Blue Trees are typically dead before being painted a characteristic shade of blue (Wattyl Blue Tree) by the community, but in in this instance been locally sculpted and installed as an enduring symbol.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is about bringing people together and caring for our community,&#8221; Mr Mitchell said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Blue Tree is a beacon of hope.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Cemeteries Trust says it warmly welcomes the community to visit Geelong Memorial Park to see the Blue Tree.<\/p>\n<p>Last week&#8217;s event follows the work by the Women&#8217;s Sharing Shed Torquay on their Blue Tree, which will be officially launched at the front of Torquay Community House today (Friday, October 20) from 2pm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANOTHER Blue Tree has grown in the Geelong region, with the Geelong Cemeteries Trust revealing its contribution to the national initiative.
