A NEW raised crossing is helping to provide Highton residents with safer ways to get to school and around the community.<\/p>\n
The crossing has been implemented on Burdekin Drive, an identified hotspot for speeding and dangerous driving incidents.<\/p>\n
Council received a local government grant from the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) to help deliver the project.<\/p>\n
Mayor Trent Sullivan said upgrading school crossing infrastructure is a top priority for Council.<\/p>\n
“This treatment slows vehicle speeds down through the area and makes the crossing supervisor and school children more prominent with a shorter distance to cross the road.<\/p>\n
“Upgrading our school crossing infrastructure is an important safety feature to help our community travel to and from school.”<\/p>\n
With data showing an increase in school crossing drive throughs, transport portfolio chair, councillor Ron Nelson, urged motorists to be mindful of their surroundings.<\/p>\n
“Council is committed to making our roads and footpaths safer for all users.<\/p>\n
“Our crossing supervisors help minimise risk, however drivers must also play their part to protect our most vulnerable community members.”<\/p>\n
