{"id":87179,"date":"2023-11-16T04:00:27","date_gmt":"2023-11-15T17:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/competitors-conquer-a-new-course-for-impossible-race\/"},"modified":"2023-11-16T04:00:27","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T17:00:27","slug":"competitors-conquer-a-new-course-for-impossible-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/sport\/competitors-conquer-a-new-course-for-impossible-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Competitors conquer a new course for Impossible Race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WILD weather forced the ninth running of the Impossible Race Ocean Paddle on Saturday to be held on river at Barwon Heads for the first time in its history.<\/p>\n<p>The 18km race usually starts at Fishermans Beach in Torquay and heads to Point Impossible before finishing at the Barwon Heads Bridge, but was altered due to local weather warnings.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121303\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121303\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121303 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/1C1A9601-scaled.jpg?_t=1699932773\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"329\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some of the top paddlers heading upstream towards Lake Connewarre.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the inclement weather and strong onshore breeze, more than 60 competitors took part in the alternative course race to Lake Connewarre and back.<\/p>\n<p>In the Open Women&#8217;s Surf Ski division, Peri Payne claimed victory in the clean and stable conditions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121306\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121306\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121306 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/Womens-winner-scaled.jpg?_t=1699932854\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"314\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121306\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Open Women&#8217;s winner Peri Payne.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Payne raced out to an early lead amongst the women&#8217;s field and didn&#8217;t look back to take home the title.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Altman was able to secure back-to-back victories in consecutive years in the Open Men&#8217;s division, however crossed the line officially in second place behind Over 40&#8217;s competitor Iva Morgan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121305\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121305\" style=\"width: 619px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121305 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/1C1A9647-scaled.jpg?_t=1699932835\" alt=\"\" width=\"619\" height=\"301\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Overall winner Iva Morgan in action.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Event organiser Pete Currie said the race, which had no following wind or swell, gave athletes a &#8220;decent workout.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All our competitors really enjoyed it, particularly those heading to the world championships in Perth from November 30.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They all found it really valuable racing on a different course, than what we&#8217;d usually have on the open sea.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most of it was real pack racing, which made it really entertaining.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Iva, Peri and Tim broke away in their respective divisions towards the end to make an exciting finish.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We look forward to returning for our tenth edition back on the sea in 2024.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121304\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121304\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121304 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/1C1A9530-scaled.jpg?_t=1699932816\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121304\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paddlers discussing their tactics before heading out for the race.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Other divisional winners included Mich O&#8217;Connor (40+ Surf Ski Women), Ben Johnson (50+ Surf Ski Men), Bill Strachan (60+ Surf Ski Men), Robin Va&#8217;auli (Outrigger Canoe Open), Alex Brunacci (50+ Outrigger Canoe Open).<\/p>\n<p>For more information, head to<a href=\"http:\/\/swracemanagement.com\/the-impossible\"> swracemanagement.com\/the-impossible<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WILD weather forced the ninth running of the Impossible Race Ocean Paddle on Saturday to be held on river at Barwon Heads for the first time in its history.
