{"id":87422,"date":"2023-11-24T04:00:48","date_gmt":"2023-11-23T17:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=87422"},"modified":"2023-11-24T04:00:48","modified_gmt":"2023-11-23T17:00:48","slug":"torquay-boardriders-celebrate-a-big-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/sport\/torquay-boardriders-celebrate-a-big-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Torquay Boardriders celebrate a big year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORQUAY Boardriders Club celebrated a year of local, national and international surfing success at its annual presentation celebration on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>More than 100 members of the club packed into Bird Rock to crown club champions and induct a new life member of the club.<\/p>\n<p>Torquay Boardriders Club managed to hold five senior and junior aggregates and its annual premier invitational Hells Djarrak event in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>U\/16 ISA World Junior champion Willis Droomer and Emily McGettigan claimed the overall open men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s champions respectively.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121726\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121726\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121726 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/TBS-Prezzo-Bird-Rock-November-2023-37-scaled.jpg?_t=1700531207\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"338\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121726\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Open Women&#8217;s finalists, from left, Sara Hickson, Angela Ball, Sarsha Pancic and winner Emily McGettigan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Club stalwart Johnny Hawken was inducted as a life member in recognition of over three decades of service and competitive surfing in Torquay.<\/p>\n<p>Hawken is a two-time open men&#8217;s club champion (2002 and 2007) and claimed the club&#8217;s prestigious single fin title in 2010 and 2023.<\/p>\n<p>He has also represented Torquay in more than 10 national qualifying teams events and has helped to co-spearhead the junior development pathways at the club in recent years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121727\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121727\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121727 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/TBS-Prezzo-Bird-Rock-November-2023-52-scaled.jpg?_t=1700531220\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Torquay Boardriders Club life members Tim, Johhny and Stu Hawken.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Torquay Boardriders Club vice-president Cahill Bell-Warren said it was a joy to celebrate the successes of &#8220;one of Torquay&#8217;s best years in recent memory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was the perfect way to complete our 2023 competitive season and a great way to thank our committee, members and generous sponsors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To see Willis and Emily take home their first open title and $1,000 cash from Geelong Financial Group was epic, and it was amazing to also induct Johnny alongside his dad Stu and brother Tim as a life member.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He [Johhny] just continues to give his time to the club and we are so thankful for his commitment and hard work.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The health of our club is really strong.
