THIS Sunday, December 3, is the International Day of People with Disability, and genU Training is marking the occasion by offering their Increasing Disability Confidence digital credential free to the community.<\/p>\n

genU Training is part of genU, the Geelong-based organisation delivering training, employment, aged care, childcare and disability services and support across Australia.<\/p>\n

“Disability services are part of our core business and as a provider who also specialises in training, we are well-positioned to lead and promote disability awareness due to our expertise and direct interaction with people who experience disability,” genU chief executive officer Clare Amies said.<\/p>\n

“With more than 70 years’ experience delivering services to the community, we have a significant role to play in leading and fostering a more inclusive and understanding society for individuals with disabilities, which is why we are pleased to offer this free training to all Australians.”<\/p>\n

genU Training general manager Lisa Abbott said the digital credential would play a small but important role in the movement toward greater inclusivity and equality in the community.<\/p>\n

“In just over an hour, everyone in the community can enhance their understanding of the experiences of people with disability.<\/p>\n

“People can learn respectful and inclusive language and communication skills and understand the importance of a person-centred approach when it comes to care and services,” she said.<\/p>\n

About 4.4 million people – or about one in five Australians – live with disability across the country according to the Australian Network on Disability, making it highly likely everyone will know someone living with an intellectual, physical, sensory or neurological disability.<\/p>\n

Stereotypes and misconceptions still exist in the community, and unconscious bias can lead people to underestimate the abilities and talents of people with disability.<\/p>\n

This can limit people reaching their potential: an outcome genU Training and genU want to change.<\/p>\n

After completing the one-hour training, participants will receive a digital credential that they can share with family, friends, and colleagues online.<\/p>\n
