THE CITY of Greater Geelong has relaunched the “It’s Our Backyard” campaign to encourage residents to think local first when seeking goods and services in the lead up to Christmas.<\/p>\n
The campaign was first launched in 2020 as part of the city’s COVID-19 Support Measures to aid the region’s recovery.<\/p>\n
Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said buying local boosted the local economy<\/p>\n
“Every purchase made locally, big or small, in-person or online, makes a difference to our community, so let’s<\/p>\n
all think, shop and support local first,” he said.<\/p>\n
Cr Sullivan highlighted various ways to prioritise local choices, including opting for a Geelong-based business when shopping online.<\/p>\n
“It could be buying Christmas presents or a gift card from a local retailer, getting fruit and veg at the nearby greengrocer, choosing a local wine, selecting a local tradesperson, donating to a local charity or trying out a different caf\u00e9.”<\/p>\n
Deputy mayor Anthony Aitken said spending money within the community played a crucial role in creating and supporting local jobs<\/p>\n
“With such a diverse range of trade and service providers, retailers, cafes and restaurants, accommodation providers and cultural and sightseeing opportunities on offer, we are spoilt for choice in our own backyard.<\/p>\n
“Residents can champion local businesses through word of mouth, giving a shout out on social media using #itsourbackyardgeelong or sharing business posts.”<\/p>\n
