THE Wurriki Nyal Civic Precinct at 137-149 Mercer Street, Geelong, has been awarded a 6-Star NABERS waste rating.<\/p>\n
The National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS), rates buildings on their environmental performance in areas like energy, water, waste, and indoor environment.<\/p>\n
In 2023 the Wurriki Nyal Civic Precinct was also awarded a 6-Star Green Star Design by the Green Building Council of Australia.<\/p>\n
Greater Geelong Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken was thrilled with the achievement.<\/p>\n
“A 6-Star waste rating for Wurriki Nyal reflects the City’s commitment to environmental responsibility and leadership in sustainable development.”<\/p>\n
“Geelong is a designated UNESCO City of Design, and we are proud that Wurriki Nyal has established itself as a benchmark in building sustainability and has set a new standard for others to follow.”<\/p>\n
The NABERS Waste Rating Report from December 1, 2022, to November 30, 2023, revealed that the precinct sent only 3.09 tonnes of waste to landfill while recycling 7.21 tonnes.<\/p>\n
This rating places Wurriki Nyal as the second building in Victoria, and the first among local government buildings in Australia, to reach this high level of waste management efficiency.<\/p>\n
Chair of the Environment and Circular Economy portfolio, Councillor Peter Murrihy said the certification was testament to the City’s vision of being a leader in sustainable urban development.<\/p>\n
