{"id":90139,"date":"2024-01-26T18:20:43","date_gmt":"2024-01-26T07:20:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/hooligan-takes-line-honours-in-passage-race\/"},"modified":"2024-01-26T18:20:43","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T07:20:43","slug":"hooligan-takes-line-honours-in-passage-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/hooligan-takes-line-honours-in-passage-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Hooligan takes line honours in Passage Race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">The 2024 Festival of Sails has opened in spectacular fashion today (Friday, January 26), with <em>Hooligan<\/em>\u00a0skippered by Marcus Blackmore snatching a nail-biting win in the 181<sup>st<\/sup> running of the Passage Race from Melbourne to Geelong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">Taking to the water for its maiden race, TP52 <em>Hooligan<\/em> captured line honours from fellow TP52s, Geoff Boettcher\u2019s <em>Secret Men\u2019s Business<\/em> and Seb Bohm\u2019s <em>Smuggler<\/em>,\u00a0in an impressive time of just three hours and five minutes, despite blustery and challenging conditions with winds of more than 60kmh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u201cIt was a good start to our program, but surviving the start line itself was one of the biggest tasks! It was seriously choppy and the moment you hit a couple of those steep waves it really knocks you back a bit,\u201d Blackmore said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126564\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126564\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-126564\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/passage-race-hooligan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126564\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hooligan took line honours this year. Photo: SALTY DINGO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">The annual Passage Race is the opening event of the festival, which is the largest keelboat sailing regatta in the Southern Hemisphere and Australia\u2019s oldest sporting event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">Festival of Sails chair Paul Buchholz said he was thrilled with the opening race which attracted just over 200 boats of all shapes and sizes to take on this morning\u2019s intense conditions from Port Phillip to Corio Bay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u201cIt was certainly a sight to see, and the competition was definitely fierce out there. It was without doubt one of the toughest starts I\u2019ve seen in my 38 years of competing in the Passage Race!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">Principal race officer Denis Thompson, who oversaw the start of the race, said he expected many of the boats that started would potentially have retired given the extremely challenging conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0T<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">here was plenty of action off the water with crowds flocking to the waterfront for the live bands and entertainment and today\u2019s return of the popular Emerging Artist Stage, which was launched at the 2023 event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">Of the 10 acts who took to the foreshore stage, it was ultimately singer-songwriter duo Mister Co who took home the title of the winning act.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">Expanded hospitality areas including the new Tipi on the Bay on Fairnie Park and the raised Foredeck bar area with prime views of the main stage were especially popular.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126565\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126565\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-126565\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/Passage-Race-Mr-Co.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126565\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emerging Artist winners Mister Co.
