{"id":91217,"date":"2024-02-20T04:00:32","date_gmt":"2024-02-19T17:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=91217"},"modified":"2024-02-20T04:00:32","modified_gmt":"2024-02-19T17:00:32","slug":"fire-conditions-monitored-as-rainfall-decreases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/fire-conditions-monitored-as-rainfall-decreases\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire conditions monitored as rainfall decreases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FOREST Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) is keeping a close eye on fire conditions in the area as the end of summer nears.<\/p>\n<p>FFMVic Otway District manager David Roberts said there has been a significant decrease in rainfall, resulting in a steady drying of forest and\u00a0grassland fuels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This drying trend means we need to be vigilant about our collective fire readiness and be prepared for fire ignition from a range of sources.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Across the grassland areas of western Victoria, grasses have been drying out quicker over\u00a0the past month, which is noticeable in\u00a0yellowing crops, stubble and grasses across the district.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Two fires were caused by lightening in Anglesea Heath in late January and were quickly brought under control by ground crews and a locally-stationed fire bombing aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our crews and aircraft remain available and ready for any fires across the Otway District,&#8221; Mr Roberts said.<\/p>\n<p>He said FFMVic would be monitoring weather and fuels for any planned burn opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Burns have been planned and prepared with the view of them being operationally ready from mid to late February, subject to the right weather and\u00a0fuel conditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The conditions, landscape and potential impact on communities are assessed before carrying out planed burns and unexpected weather conditions may result is plans changing and the burn not going ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Crews work closely with the Bureau of Meteorology to get access to the weather conditions for planned burns, with spring and autumn providing more opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>This week temperatures soared into the high 30s across the Geelong region, leading to a total Fire Ban on Tuesday and an Extreme fire danger rating.<\/p>\n<p>To stay up to date on all warnings and restrictions, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/emergency.vic.gov.au\">emergency.vic.gov.au<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FOREST Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) is keeping a close eye on fire conditions in the area as the end of summer nears.
