UPGRADED facilities are now open to members of the Marshall Cricket Club with assistance from all levels of government.<\/p>\n
The new state-of-the-art facilities at South Barwon Reserve, includes updated nets, storage facilities for equipment, and run-ups for both turf and hard wicket cricket.<\/p>\n
City of Greater Geelong councillor Ron Nelson toured the new facility and said the city was happy to provide support to Marshall Cricket Club through the planning and construction process.<\/p>\n
“The City initiated the project and provided ongoing guidance to the club as it navigated the design and construction of the modern turf and hard wicket training facility.<\/p>\n
“The Bears can now cater for the significant growth it has experienced over the last few years as interest in cricket skyrockets among juniors and seniors.”<\/p>\n
The project totalled $446,000 funded by the Australian Government’s Community Development Grants Programme ($237,000), Victorian Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund ($194,000) and Marshall Cricket Club ($15,000).<\/p>\n
The city assisted during the scoping and planning stages of the project, facilitating the funding requirements, reported milestones, and liaised with state and federal government.<\/p>\n
Corangamite federal member Libby Coker said the new facilities will help inspire a new generation of Aussie cricketers.<\/p>\n
“Boasting five senior teams, four junior boys’ teams and the ‘Blasters’ program with 30 participants, cricket is alive and well in Marshall and I hope these new facilities are enjoyed for many years to come.”<\/p>\n
The old training nets did not meet current standards and provision levels, according to the city.<\/p>\n
The lacklustre facilities often led to training sessions being reduced down to two nets due to poor light and weather.<\/p>\n
This limitation also reduced the training time available for both junior and senior training programs.<\/p>\n
Geelong MP Christine Couzens said the Victorian government was proud to support the club with the construction their new training facilities.<\/p>\n
“I congratulate the club on their work to provide first class facilities for their members to enjoy, and to help the club grow in the future.”<\/p>\n
