THE Barwon River in Geelong has been declared safe again for recreational activities, after tests found a reduction in blue-green algae in water samples.<\/p>\n

According to test results received by the Corangamite CMA last week, the existing levels of blue-green algae no longer pose a risk to recreational users, in accordance with Victorian government guidance,<\/p>\n

The Corangamite CMA stated there was no longer a warning for users of the river to not come into physical contact with the water in the Barwon River through Geelong from below Baum’s Weir to the Lower Breakwater.<\/p>\n

Monitoring will continue, with weekly tests conducted and the public kept informed of any changes.<\/p>\n

A combination of hot weather, low water flows and high nutrient levels in the Barwon River contributed to the blue-green algae outbreak.<\/p>\n
