{"id":94058,"date":"2024-04-13T04:00:13","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T18:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=94058"},"modified":"2024-04-12T16:30:11","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T06:30:11","slug":"a-celebration-of-film-and-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/living\/a-celebration-of-film-and-community\/","title":{"rendered":"A celebration of film and community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Geelong Pride Film Festival has announced an exciting program of events ahead of its opening screening on April 18.<\/p>\n<p>The festival, which platforms and celebrates contemporary and classic LGBTIQA+ themed films and stories, will feature 18 diverse events over 11 days.<\/p>\n<p>Now headed into its 7th year, the upcoming film festival is also its most affordable, with reduced ticket prices starting at under $10 available.<\/p>\n<p>Festival director, Stephen Ryan, said the event was about showing great films, but also creating a fun and inclusive community event.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_132067\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-132067\" style=\"width: 598px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-132067 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/04\/10.04.2024_15.16.22_REC.png?_t=1712726850\" alt=\"\" width=\"598\" height=\"536\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-132067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The documentary &#8220;Equal the Contest&#8221; will screen on April 20. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What I want audiences to take away from the festival is just the joy, or the great experience, of seeing a film together with other people,&#8221; Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>He said a key focus of the festival&#8217;s programming was screening films that are uplifting and have positive storylines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important for people to be able to see their lives reflected on screen and to see a diverse range of stories on screen where those characters are the main character \u2013 they&#8217;re not the side character in a series.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s also important to then be able to go and celebrate those stories with community and see them in a supportive environment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_132069\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-132069\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-132069 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/04\/10.04.2024_15.28.55_REC.png?_t=1712727005\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"335\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-132069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Australian premiere of documentary &#8220;Hidden Master: The Legacy George Platt Lynes&#8221; will also screen, detailing the life and work of America&#8217;s first openly gay artist. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s what we try to create with the festival by having our special events and screenings, so people can come along and meet new people and see some great films.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The festival&#8217;s program has been carefully curated by a committee of volunteers and includes 12 feature films and approximately 45 short films packaged into a variety of screening events.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan said the committee reviewed more than 1,500 films from across the world to select this year&#8217;s program.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights include Pedro Almod\u00f3var&#8217;s &#8220;Strange Way of Life&#8221;, a western drama about two gunslingers, played by Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, who reunite after 25 years, and the Australian premiere of the documentary &#8220;Hidden Master&#8221; which details the life and work of George Platt Lynes, one of the first openly gay American artists.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_132068\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-132068\" style=\"width: 599px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-132068 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/04\/10.04.2024_15.29.23_REC.png?_t=1712726993\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"350\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-132068\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal star in short western drama &#8220;Strange Way of Life&#8221;.
