THE community continue to rally around beloved Wathaurong man Norm Stanley following his stage four cancer diagnosis, this week hosting a fundraising event to assist with his medical expenses.<\/p>\n

The gathering, held at the Geelong Arts Centre on Wednesday, raised more than $20,000 and featured live music, art and market stalls.<\/p>\n

Event organiser, artist Kiri Tawhai, said the event was “a bloody good night” with the venue “packed to the walls” with supporters.<\/p>\n

“Anyone that’s connected to the community knows we have a pretty deadly one.<\/p>\n

“It was just a real testament to the strength and big heart of the community that we have here.<\/p>\n

“We talk about this big heart, and [Norm Stanley and his wife, Nikki] are definitely at the centre of that.<\/p>\n

“They’re a bit of a beacon for this community, so we’re just thankful that we can give something and help them in this time.”<\/p>\n

Ms Tawhai said the evening was about allowing the community to connect, talk, cry and feel like it was making a difference.<\/p>\n

“A big part of the night [was] centred on healing \u2013 healing for Norm, healing for Nikki’s heart, and the kids’ heart, but also healing for each of us, almost creating this energy of healing that circulates through community, but then ideally lands at Norm and helps empower him and offer him the strength that he needs.”<\/p>\n

She said a large number of people and organisations had contributed to the fundraiser’s success, including the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Corporation, the Cotton On Foundation, Murran, Ngaramilli, The Gordon and Platform Arts.<\/p>\n

Local artists donated more than 50 artworks, some retailing for up to $2,000, to the event’s silent auction, while musicians donated their time and talent to entertain the attendees.<\/p>\n

“The sheer breadth of donations is the reason why this was such a great event,” Ms Tawhai said.<\/p>\n

Geelong Arts Centre donated their venue to house the gathering, and staff members Emily Donoghue and Isabella Farchione helped with the event logistics.<\/p>\n

“Norm [Stanley] has had such a profound impact on the community and is so well known and loved by the Geelong Arts Centre team,” Ms Donoghue said.<\/p>\n

“It was incredibly moving to see community coming together to rally around and support Norm with such an amazing celebration of art and music.<\/p>\n

“We are humbled to have played a small role in such an important event, and hope that the proceeds make a difference for Norm and Nikki during such a difficult time.”<\/p>\n

The event’s GoFundMe will remain active in the weeks to come, and Ms Tawhai encouraged the community to continue to contribute what they can.<\/p>\n
