{"id":94486,"date":"2024-04-21T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-20T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=94486"},"modified":"2024-04-17T19:45:09","modified_gmt":"2024-04-17T09:45:09","slug":"heart-foundation-launches-major-campaign-to-combat-heart-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/living\/heart-foundation-launches-major-campaign-to-combat-heart-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Heart Foundation launches major campaign to combat heart disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Heart Foundation has launched its largest ever physical activity initiative, Walking Wins, aiming to encourage 400,000 Australians to increase their movement for better heart health.<\/p>\n<p>Heart disease, a leading cause of death in the country, is preventable yet continues to pose a significant health threat.<\/p>\n<p>Data from the National Health Survey reveals only 22.4 per cent of adults meet the Australian Physical Activity Guidelines&#8217; recommended physical activity levels.<\/p>\n<p>Active Geelong project coordinator Janet Ashton has been instrumental in reactivating and redesigning a GP-led walking program in partnership with the Western Victorian Primary Health Network (PHN).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the support of the Heart Foundation&#8217;s walking program and funding from the PHN, we have worked to create a better, larger, sustainable GP-supported walking program targeting the less active members of the community,&#8221; Ms Ashton said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/HeartbeatWalkers_17477.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"501\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Heart Foundation Walking Wins campaign hopes to encourage 400,000 Australians to increase their movement for better heart health.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She highlighted the extensive benefits of walking groups, especially for older populations with chronic health conditions, noting improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol, weight management, reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes management, and chronic pain reduction.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And, then of course one of the biggest benefits is getting out, meeting new people, enjoying the fresh air and feeling like you belong to<\/p>\n<p>our walking community,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The social and overall wellbeing benefits are perhaps the hardest to measure but they are, without doubt, one of the most reported benefits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Heart Foundation manager for heart health, Kym Lang, highlighted the benefits of walking as an accessible and straightforward way to combat heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Walking is a great way to incorporate more physical activity into your routine,&#8221; Ms Lang said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an affordable and simple way to start.
